Border re-opening

first-of-all, a huge 'thank you' to my friends above the 49th...accepting science (at least 70% of you so far) and proactively protecting yourself (and most importantly, everyone you come in contact with). Secondly, a pre-emptive apology for all the Delta coming your way from the deniers (40+%) down here...I will N-E-V-E-R understand that mentality, but perhaps Darwin does (and he's playing 'the long game')
So I jumped-on Arrive/CAN to upload my documents/vax-card/etc. and got stumped by having to spell-out my 14-day quarantine plan that I don't have. My 'day-plan' was to swing-by Panther Wheel in Surrey, scope-out any/all Shoppers Drug Marts (for my favorite Adidas anti/deo...only non-aluminum oxide on the market and no longer available in The States), spend a few hours at MP Triangle, grab a bite and then scurry-home before my pup's bladder-evacuation schedule reaches DefCon 5.

Has anyone made the trip across yet? If so, what kind of quarantine plan would one need if they're only in Canada for 3-5 hours?

Why make a comment apologizing for the delta coming our way from the deniers. You still can get covid and pass it along to people vaccinated or unvaccinated. You can be the one bringing it up here and passing it to people.

Sorry, I don't really think any of us who use sp/mp's during this time and the last year get to speak about following the science because we certainly have not. Double vaccinated myself but this hobby still presents a risk to oneself and others.

IMO opening the border now is akin to saying "fuck it". We all get the economic ramifications but at this stage when the kids have yet to be vaccinated, and are heading back to school, I am just shaking my head. Mind you if you look at completely removing all restrictions as per Florida and sadly Alberta, well for fucks sake. The Darwin Variant cometh.

Just to try to balance the negativity a bit....

I expect to be waiting in line the day they open the border!!! As long as they only open to double-vaxxers, I'm not too worried about it.

I'm surprised they're still expecting quarantine. I thought double-vaxxers were allowed into Canada now with no quarantine. Maybe that's if there's a quick-test at the border and you test positive?

I don't know about the rest of you. Should the US mirror what the Canadian government is doing, I'm not about to pay $200 for a PCR test or $150 for a Rapid test just so I can pick up my parcels in Blaine which have been waiting there for more than a year.

Hi GJ 🙂

This Link might give You some more Info about entering Canada .

https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/coronavirus-disease-covid-19/arrivecan.html

If You meet the Canadian requirements, I don't think there's any Quarantining on our side of the Border. You'll need to Download the "ArriveCAN" App for disclosing your COVID-19 Vaccinations .
Get Tested before entering Canada, and submit to another Rapid Test upon Entry .

Good luck, and I'm sure there's some Sushi stops pining for your Return ! 😉 LOL 🤣

unless I read the website incorrectly, it states that I have to have a 'plan' :

For your quarantine plan, questions include:

  • whether you have accommodation where you can quarantine for 14 days or possibly longer
  • the address of your quarantine location (the place where you'll quarantine for 14 days)
    • If you are arriving by marine vessel, include the address where the vessel will be moored.
    • If you are fully vaccinated and seeking the fully vaccinated exemption, include the location where you will be for the most time in the 14 days after entry

since I'll only be in BC for 4-5 hours, I put my home address in but failed due to the postal code and province questions. I guess I could google an Air B 'n' B address that's avaiable, but that's kinda fogging the mirror at best

So it looks like Canada is doing what it can to prevent day trips up. I live close enough to go back and forth in one day, on the Arriv Can app I have meet every step to be let in for non essential purposes. The road block is still, even if you have a 72 hr negative covid test and of course fully vaccinated you will still need to provide a 14 day quarantine plan and a return home to USA as your plan is not acceptable as you can't type in a USA address.

I don't know of many USA day trippers willing can provide for themselves a potential 14 day quarantine in Canada when the smart thing to do is go HOME as your 14 day quarantine.

If this does not change thousands of day trippers will not be allowed to go to Canada for the future or maybe ever.

I guess I could like and put in some air b n b in Canada as my 14 day quarantine plan but I don't want to risk going to jail or banned from travel or a big fine for lying.

And the smart thing to do when you test positive is to quarantine where you are, not travel back home and bump into so many people.

How would they to test visitors right now in Canada. Would police follow out of country plates and swab them? You could technically be covid free crossing the border and catch it at the restroom right after you cross. And if you do get covid while the cops are on you in Canada you will now to whisked away in a white plastic suit and full head gear for a 2 week quarantine at your full expense I can see that being easily 20k to 50k costs.

K, so I did a bit of recon this morning and here's what I found-out:

1. proof of vax (duh)
2. valid passport (double-duh)
3. negative covid test within 72 hours of crossing (arriveCAN lists the acceptable tests...PCR Molecular being the most available/accepted)
4. a Canadian address where (in an emergency) you can quarantine for 14 days. This is where those of us below the 49th fail, so I spent the better part of my morning on hold with two Canadian agencies and it 'boils-down' to this:

'you can provide the address of a Canadian hotel/motel closest to where you're visiting in the off chance of you testing positive from the 'random' test that could be required while crossing the border.'

The bottom-line would be that the odds of being picked at random when crossing is pretty long, and they're even longer for that border-test to come-back positive since the results you provide on the app are only 3 days (at max) old.

This info was provided to me and I'm just relaying for anyone interested...as always, YMMV and do your own due-diligence :)

Thanks for doing the recon. I wonder if during a random test and its a positive why would Canada simply say in way more polite terms " GTFO". I mean why would they risk you maybe giving covid to another Canadian on the way to the hotel/motel/where one listed as a 14 day quarantine. Simply give the infected back to America and put in the computer that an infested person tried to come up.
I would have thought it would be for if you become infected here and aren’t eligible to return to the states. The similar scenario of not being able to fly home from wherever has me scrapping travel for now. Looking forward to getting a < 72hr road trip to Seattle in so I can’t be turned back.

From what I understand, they'll randomly test people as they cross but will allow them to continue to their destination and not wait-around for the test results. If the test is positive, then they reach you via your contact information and let you know that your quarantine plan will need to be implemented

Ok, I thought the random test were instant results at the border and that is why its random, it would take forever and a day to test every one coming in. Thats where my confusion was, If it instant result just turn the person away.

Anyway, it sounds like going to Canada is a roll of the dice, in the slim chance your random test is positive you will have to hope your BS quarantine plan is not figured out by Canada. If its real you are facing a out of this world bill or worse facing criminal charges for lying about your plan and being thrown in jail.

I have been across the border regularly for "Essential Day trips" and believe what golfer John has laid out is what you would likely expect.
There are tents that are Covid Testing Units at the borders, you may get randomly selected and tested, then allowed to carry on if you qualify, then they would contact you via ArriveCan app if you test positive and you would be expected to follow your Quarantine plan and you can be assured that they would be checking up on whether you were following said plan...
