both are good. if you want all wheel drive get the audi.

for same $ you seems to get a car with better interior material in an Audi.

btw, if you are getting BMW 3er, the new generation is comming out soon. I personally like the current model better. the new ones just look dreadful.

hitrack, which one of those photos is your pimpmobile :)

Sorry all, should have been more specific. Although hitracks suggestions are definitely sweet but slightly out of my price range as an income of $2.00 hr I only make :) The choices I have in mind are preowned 1998 or 1999 BMW M3 with 90ks or 2001 AUDI A4 with 50ks. Both are in the same price category.

Although hitracks suggestions are definitely sweet but slightly out of my price range as an income of $2.00 hr I only make :) The choices I have in mind are preowned 1998 or 1999 BMW M3 with 90ks or 2001 AUDI A4 with 50ks. An M3 and an Audi A4 are two different vehicles entirely. The M3 is a real performance vehicle, but unfortunately they also attract quite aggressive drivers who can abuse them so have it checked out carefully (helps if you know the previous driver). As a result, as the M3 gets older you may have more trouble selling it than the Audi.

If the Audi has only the 4 cylinder engine (even if turbo-charged) then go for the M3 - you will probably never be happy with the Audi's performance if you wanted M3 type performance and will be forever kicking yourself.

If budget is a concern, go with the Audi - it's newer and has fewer miles. It should also be significantly cheaper to insure. Check out the insurance rates before making a final decision.

If you're buying from a dealer, this is one time that you want to seriously consider buying an extended warranty if you can negotiate the price for the warranty to the dealer's cost (which can be only 1/2 or less than the "regular" price). BMWs and Audis can be very, very expensive to repair if something goes wrong.

If you can't afford the repairs or insurance, consider a used Japanese vehicle. They tend to have the best overall reliability based on Consumer Reports, BCAA, Lemon-Aid and other consumer reports. You'll also find the insurance much cheaper as well. Note that most Hondas run on regular fuel - the BMWs run on premium fuel and I believe the same is true for the Audi.

My pics are gone!!! Lousey dieselstation. But ya they are to expensive for most, maybe more likely around 1/2 of those prices.

Anyway I was watching Discover the other night and there was a show on called ultimate ralley cars and the Audi Quattro was the number 1 rally car.

I know these are miles off from a BMW or Audi, but have a boo on the net or what ever at the Subaru WRX and the Mitsubishi Evo. That way you could own a brand new car, that still kicks ass.

M3 vs A4?? Are you sure that you don't mean S4? I don't think the A4 is in the same price category as the M3. The M3 and S4 are comparable in price and performance.

The 98 M3 is a performance model of the 3 series for BMW. Although both vehicles are nice they both posses different characteristics in drive, feel, performance and luxury. But as in the case of any used car, you should look at the history of the vehicle and make sure you check it thouroghly before making your descision.

I think you'd be spending more money on the BMW with 90k since you'll probably have to spend alot in replacing parts and maintence due to the milage.

Either way you're choosing fine European design.

I can confirm that BMW is going to be expensive to keep running. especially when you're talking about the 98 E36 model. more over if you're talking about something that is M, it will cost you even more than a normal 3er, cuz the M cars are not as common, parts will have to come straight from Munich.

2001 Audi if I remembers well is just out of warranty. expect to have many electrical problems. I used to have a 2003 model A4 3.0. I have had problems with the moonroof, all the lights, and a busted up radio. also some problems with windshield washer. which was quite annoying consider it was new. in no time I changed to the Infinity G30 before the warranty runs out.

These cars are dream to drive, both BMW and Audi. but they are costly to keep running

If you are going to own the car for longer than three years, then I'd go for the Audi --- The BMW will kill you with repair costs. I have a seven series, I know.

Audi share alot of parts with Volkswagen, which means bosch, which means slightly cheaper parts.

I worked for many years as a mechanic on both. Personally I prefer BMW. Both are expensive to repair, and in the long run it's probably close to a wash. BMW also uses plenty of Bosch, and if your clever or have a mech who is, you can save on some parts.

I have owned both and found repair costs very similar, I currently drive a 01 bmw 330xi 5speed. its by far the best bmw I have owned, based on driveability, cost af repair, comfort, power and of course handleing.

BMW service is atrocious. You will need lots of maintenance: it will be poorly done and it will be ridiculously overpriced. They are fun to drive on the rare occasions when they are operating properly.
Ditto for Audi. I owned an A6 for years. Under warranty they're fine, but look out afterwards. The electrical system sucked. The fancy audio system crapped out three times, until I could not even get a replacement from anywhere in North America, even if I was willing to pay $1500 for the head unit.

And, the mechanicals were always, I repeat always suspect. The brake light didn't even come on to warn you of rotor wear, a complete brake job will cost over $2K. Waste of money. Should have gone with Acura sooner than I did.

I owned a 3.5RL; never had any problems with it. Have since switched to a 3.2CL-S. Also no problems. The service intervals are barely needed, and the dealerships are knowlegeable. Audi service is limited on the Lower Mainland. So avoid it if you live out of the city. In fact avoid it at all costs. Shit, you can get two well equipped cars for the same price.
