So, what are all my fellow Canadians planning on buying before the HST kicks in? Fender Stratocaster? Costco Brand "Box-o-Sox"? Inflatable bondage chair with instructional video? Spill the beans and tell us what you're splurging on!

So far I have bought a load of new photography equipment and some stainless-steel kitchen gear :D
What about you?

uh...Edmonton.
lol!!!!....I had no idea the HST was coming...it must be a B.C. thing. I do most of my shopping on kijiji....I can find cool things that people have paid 3 times more than what they are asking. And, no H.S.T. Although, having said that, I just sold off a bunch of my crap that way...the last deal is concluded tonight...buddy just phoned me...he's in Edson and wanted to make sure I was still going to be around. I told him...."no problem, I haven't a single plan for this evening"...well....other than lawn bowling...but that's a maybe. I still have dry laundry to hang.

nice camera you have there btw.

kindest,

eddie.

p.s...."inflatable bondage chair?".....there is such a thing? Say it isn't so.

I had to renew my hockey tickets early to avoid the HST......can you imagine having to pay 5 months earlier than usual? Just after they stink up the place in the playoffs too

Just got a 12K heating / AC system installed - saved me $840 in HST money :)
Unfortunately, I have already spent my HST money on fleshly delights, so much for saving the tax.

Yeah that was annoying I even fell for the March 31 deadline, where you get a special offer.
Which I found out a week later was your name entered into a draw to play in the Canucks golf tourney

I am Canadian.
A new 52" HD flat-screen TV, couple of bookcases, a new kitchen table with chairs, and a new glass coffee table. :) Oh! And a painting easel for my art and drafting room. I should also be picking up some new pots and pans and a new vacuum too. :p
Hmmm.. art/painting room. Any need for a chubby old guy for neked modeling?

Wow – misinformation alert!

Listed purchases proposed to beat the HST in this tread include:
A new 52" HD flat-screen TV, couple of bookcases, a new kitchen table with chairs, and a new glass coffee table. bugatti veyron, ashton martin dbs, rolex submariner, breitling bentley

None of the afore listed goods will cost one cent more after the HST than before it. We now have GST of 5% plus PST of 7% =12%. With HST, since PST is abolished you will pay the very same 12%. In fact the merchants will get a 12% rebate on the taxes they pay in producing/distributing etc instead of the current 5% rebate, so either they will charge less, or be able to delay charging more. (and don’t forget pre GST, the federal government imposed a hidden manufactures tax of 11% which showed up in the total price of all Canadian merchandize but as a hidden tax in addition to the 7% provincial tax)

The difference in having HST is only in those services that were exempt from PST (legal services had to charge PST and GST or 12% before and will charge 12% after) and those goods that were exempt from PST, all exemptions for political reasons. And I have no doubt future politics will create exemptions from HST just as there were exemptions from PST, the difference being HST is administered federally not provincially.

Yes, the mass amount of mis-information in the media and by other sources is outstanding

and the fact that people can get so riled up before they actually inform themselves of the facts is a dissapointment in our society. At least take the time to educate yourself before you slap your signature on a document protesting something that you don't understand and have probably devoted zero time to

an example

A Hair Salon owner will now have to charge 7% more tax to it's customers, but the cost of doing business through tax rebates and writeoffs just went down by 7%, therefor either lowering their prices, or at least delaying their rise as through supply and demand economics, the price point of a good or service is regulated by the industry that it is in

This reminds me of a study in which a group went to a city/state fair and gathered signatures on a petition banning dihydrogen oxide, saying it was everywhere and we needed to stop it

They gathered thousands of signatures

What is DiHydrogen Oxide?

Interestingly, SPs fees will be subject to HST.

Many SPs claim that they declare their income and pay income taxes, but if they are claiming more than $40,000 (or did the cut-off for GST change? I haven't looked for a while) then they legally have to register for GST/HST and start collecting it. They also legally have to give an invoice with the legal name of their business, it's address and its GST/HST registration number.

Like that is going to happen.

Which makes me wonder, if they aren't charging GST/HST and aren't registered for GST/HST, how are they declaring their income and paying income taxes? Or are they?

Most SPs that aren't "broken people" understand that paying some income tax is desirable. That is how a person becomes entitled to the Canada Pension Plan for instance. Years ago, many escorts declared themselves as "Music Teachers". I know of one who declares herself as a "performance artist", the other common declared occupation is fitness trainer.

Now that a self-employed person can pay into unemployment insurance, it's even more important to declare some of the income received. That way, if the woman finds herself unable to work, she can apply for unemployment insurance. She would be eligible for the maternity benefit for instance. Also, she would then become eligible for assistance on her msp premium, the gst rebate, the child tax benefit, etc. If she is going to school, she becomes eligible for the education tax credits.

Paying taxes is part of being able to apply for and be granted credit. If the SP you are seeing owns her own condo, she pays income tax. She had to in order to qualify for the mortgage. The same goes for the purchase or lease of a car, the possession of a credit card and the ability to rent a suite in a professionally managed building.

The constant claim that SPs don't pay income tax is silly for the girls that work for MPs, Agencies or as Independents. The CRA doesn't care if they declare as a "piano teacher" it does care if they declare no income or are living a lifestyle that doesn't match the income declared.
Very well said......and as someone who is self employed I completely agree with your points....also the gals if they are smart can write off a lot of expenses.
