There was some comment above about not using Backpage. Probably not a good or necessary short term option but long term it soulds like a great idea. Backpage is a vulnerable target for the prohibitionists and someone at Backpage is making millions a month at the expense of workers and clients.

I have been told a Canadian replacement should cost about $50,000 to design, half a year's work over two years.

As I see it, the ads would cost $1.00 each rather than $5.00 each and every year or so any surplus profit would go back to those who placed ads, in the form of credit for more ads, in other words, free ads.

It would be a cooperative venture directed by the people posting the ads. Backpage would respond by offering free ads in an attempt to put the coop service out of business. The coop response would be to distribute the service or the software globally.

Just an idea to keep in mind while we deal with the current changes.

An advertiser directed service would also eliminate the offensive declaration that you are not offering sexual services and there would be no temptation to check out the garage sales while you are on the site.
Have you thought of approaching the classified sites that already exist - Leolist, TheEroticList, Duttslist, etc., rather than starting from scratch on a new site?

i just looked at this how backpage handles ad payments and you can do this pretty seamlessly by using quickbt.com:

you just copy and paste the bitcoin amount and the address into the respective fields at quickbt.com and press "Next: Quote":

enter a phone number, click "Text Me," at which point it will send you a verification PIN that you have to enter in the "Phone PIN" field. enter an e-mail and click "Checkout":

it will take you to Order Summary page:

press "Continue" and it will take you to the payment processor page that will allow you to pay by interac:

you should be automatically redirected on the backpage payment page once payment is received.
Thanks VanCityBoi27, I thought I had better get into the current century and set myself up for using bitcoins and your instructions were spot on :)

Got my wallet, made it to the payment page. Hmm, don't take credit card, ok then lets use my CIBC debit. Oops, can't use a advantage debit card because it has the visa capabilities also. Ok lets try TD debit, damn, its one of those enhanced debit cards also that acts as a visa. Ok on to the BMO debit card. Wait, its a commercial account debit card, they don't allow that either. Ok, so now I am down to going to the bank, get a money order and send it to them via snail mail and maybe in a week or two I might have a few bitcoins in my purse, I mean wallet :eyebrows: I can tell right away this new easier digital money is going to be such a time saver for me. :frusty:

And yes, I know I am over dramatizing this and there are other ways and probably easier ways to get my bitcoins in my wallet, its just that I like to keep things quick and simple and at the moment this seems to be a pain in my ass, as you can see on my ads, trips to Athens are not on my to do list :fear:

You can go into the bookstore in SFU downtown (Harbour Centre) and they have a Bitcoin ATM there where you can add bitcoins to your wallet (or convert them into cash, I presume). Not sure of the details of how it works, but I saw it when I was in there and it seemed to be operational.

BITCOIN WALLET AND EXCHANGE COIN CAFE REFUSES BACKPAGE USERS

12/07/2015BY P. H. MADORE

https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/bitc...ackpage-users/

Coin Cafe is meant to be an easy way to buy and hold bitcoins, but they apparently do not like people attempting to use bitcoins at the free classifieds provider Backpage.com. After the problems that the website had in the last several weeks, with all of its other merchant processing accounts closed, Bitcoin has garnered some coverage.

However, it appears that users of Coin Cafe are not welcome to use their hosted wallet to purchase services from Backpage.com. The site seems almost hostile to those who would use its services to hire ads from Backpage.com. It seems this is a company policy, not necessarily the company folding under law enforcement pressure.

So far, Coinbase and others have yet to say anything about Backpage.com, but these hosted services are known to work with the government. If the government happens to currently trying to shut down Backpage.com, it seems likely that these wallets will eventually help them.

The solution, for anyone trying to pay Backpage.com, is to get the bitcoins separately and use an actual wallet. Even a mobile or SPV wallet like Electrum will work fine for this purpose. In this scenario, the acquisition of the bitcoins becomes the problem. LocalBitcoins.com will probably be a good way to make this happen. You could buy bitcoins for the long-term usage of the site, for instance, by buying a Paypal MyCash card and going on LocalBitcoins (up to $500). Depending on how fast you want to get your bitcoins, you set a price per BTC you're willing to pay, and just have one transaction for $500 worth at that price.

Once a user has the bitcoins, they should not leave them in the LocalBitcoins wallet though they could probably do that as well. It would, however, be much more wise to send them to their wallet from there, which is very easy to do. Then using their wallet, pay for the advertising, and keep the coins safe by password protecting or otherwise encrypting the wallet. That would be more ideal than trying to use a web wallet service that ultimately may do something like Coin Cafe is doing.

It would seem that Coin Cafe is fully within their rights, but it becomes a question of whose addresses are interacting with Backpage.com – Coin Cafe, or the user? It would seem that if the user were renting the address from the site, then the address would belong to him or her. Therefore, whatever traffic was taking place to and from the address, it would be associated with the user, not the site.
