I originally posted this on another message board, but I thought I'd repost it here as well.
A little over a week ago, I got an email from a representative from American Income Life (AIL). Apparently they saw my resume online and wanted for me to come in for an interview for a customer service rep position. At first I thought it was a multi-level marketing scam much like Primerica, but I was curious so I went.
When they called me in for a second interview, I started becoming less suspicious and more excited. I started believing that this was a legitimate company and even let a few things slip under my radar, like the fact that you have to pay a $300 fee up front plus pay for the insurance course (another $375), as well as the job being strictly commission based. I ended up going for the third interview yesterday afternoon and they hired me on the spot. Given my current job situation (will be losing my job in a month), I was excited to not worry about job hunting anymore and gladly put the $300 fee on my credit card.
When I got home, I decided to do some research on my new 'employer', and was floored at the number of negative feedback there was on the company. Apparently, the administrative 'fee' goes straight into the pockets of the other employees and that there is no intention of reimburstment (even though they state otherwise). Furthermore, I heard horror stories of people working seven days a week for at least 10 hours a day, only to earn less than 300 dollars for that week. As soon as I started reading these horror stories of people getting sucked into this company (both the client and employee side), my heart sank as I realize I was had. I immediately contacted my credit card company and told them of an illegal transaction on my card and if there was any way to cancel it. I also contacted my former 'employer' via email stating that I will be unable to continue in this training process, and that I would like the fee refunded to me, (of course their reply was a NO).
I am so glad I caught this when I did, I was so ready to sign my life away.
