I was thinking about trying some Vietnamese food this weekend. The only place I have really eaten Vietnamese food is Au Petite on Main Street. However, it's a pretty small restaurant with potential lineups.

When reading up reviews on Yelp or any other site, I have noticed the following negative comments that seem to be common for some Vietnamese restaurants:

  1. Food is uncooked
  2. Food contains MSG
  3. Food is greasy
  4. Restaurant is dirty
  5. Service is rude
Anyway, I am curious to know if there are any recommendations on some decent safe Pho restaurants in Vancouver?

LOL....All five of those are "features" of Pho joints

1. uncooked? That's what you get when you order "rare steak" in your noodles. Plus the sprouts and Basil are supposed to be raw.

2. MSG = standard ingredient in the broth....it's all a matter of degree. Some places use a lot some use less

3. Greasy = deep fried spring rolls are supposed to be greasy...Jeez

4. Dirty = just go to a place right after they re-open from "renovations" which is the code word for "we got shut down by Foodsafe BC and had to repair our dishwasher"

5. Rudeness = I think it's just the way the servers speak English with the heavy Viet accent.

-------------

Au Petit Cafe is one of the better places but they are more known for their Viet Sub sammiches than Pho

Good pho is characterized by fresh ingredients, al-dente noodles (most places are abit over-cooked), clear broth.

Pho Tan - kind of across the street from Au Petit on Main. Second location - 6516 Kingsway
Pho Hoa - on Granville @ 15th. It's the cleanest location of that chain in Vancouver
Pho Century - Kingsway and Sperling
Green Lemongrass - Westminster hwy in Richmond (just east of #3 Rd.) and on 1086 Kingsway (west of Knight)
Thai Son 1450 SW Marine Dr and 6471 Victoria Dr.

Linh cafe on W. 4th for french Viet fusion. Many of my friends had good experience there. Personally I love dingy rude viet places all part of the charm!

I can't remember the name of the place (it's Vietnamese words) but I once ran into James Barber (the late food writer) at a wonderful pho shop on the east side of Main St at around 20th Ave. He swore it was the best in town. Mind you, that was a few decades ago...

Pho Hoang is prob the place you're thinking of.
consistently good, I highly recommend.

besides the food, also worth going there to see
cute, young waitress. last time I went there was a
stunner on shift that looked like Asa Akira.
unfortunately I was on a date and had to resist rubber necking.

Thanks for all the suggestions. After all the reviews online and the comments here, I think I am going to keep it safe and just eat at White Spots in Kitsalano. Simple food, not disgustingly dirty and non-rude service :)

You don't get service at any Asian restaurant unless it's high end. You order and eat then pay and get out. If there is a issue then you tell the waiter/waitress. That's the same way in Asia.

Cuu Long Restaurant, 3911 Knight Street. Great tasting food, super friendly staff, great big portions and priced accordingly.

Haven't been for 3 or 4 years but it was in the rotation for brunch for a number of years. Try their omlette, comes with lettuce to roll it up in. Lots of greens and herbs. Pho and everything else great too.
Waitresses were cute

For me, life is too short for boring food.

Yeah, I agree, nice staff (family orientated) and the food was really good. Just the place is a bit small and I found their sandwiches kind of average; just stick to their noodles. :)

For me,I always love Vietnamese Pho. The one I highly recommend is not in Vancouver. It is in Aldergrove on 264 and Fraser Highway right beside the government iiquor store and Save On. It is so good. After I found that place, I was there 5 times within a week. I highly recommend the house special!

Then I took my next door neighbour there and he was also back there within a few days. Unfortunately I don't remember the name. However the location is right on. The resturant is run by a real Vietnamese family and not a Chinese from HK!
