Ernie Kovacs invented television comedy.
There is no doubt that Ernie Kovacs was the master of special effects. And this was at the time of live TV and before computers. I still don't know how he did some of those things.

But for my money, the best stand up comics:
1. George Carlin (he pushed the envelope to new levels)
2. Bill Cosby
3. Rodney Dangerfield

I saw Ellen Degeneris live at the Queen E. a few years ago, and -- now this is not an exaggeration, but the factual truth -- I have never laughed so hard in all my life. I was convulsing helplessly, tears streaming down my face, and utterly unable to control myself. And I hadn't even smoked up beforehand!

The 2nd funniest stand-up bit I ever saw was in the movie "The Aristocrats." Damn near peed my overalls.

lot of funny people out there ...

... probably about 20 "great" comedians. For every great stand-up, there is usulally a team of writers. Newhart wrote his own material. Robin Williams is in a whole other league. Johnny Carson was funny in his own way.

I've seen some recent, new comedians that are pretty funny ... the problem is though that the young, funny ones that get recognized get over-exposed within a few short years. They probably make a ton of money, but use up all their routines and money. The older comedians took years and years to work up a following and had more staying power as a result.

Jeff Foxworthy is pretty funny, and natural. There's too many to list. Seinfeld was pretty funny in his standup.

Good question. Too many really good ones to narrow down into just one.

hey

all those listed are funny ... it's frieakin' hard work to be funny on any level. I admire all those that can stand up and tell jokes.

It always surprises me how a comedian I did not like when I was younger can now become rip roaringly hilarious as I get older.

Cheech and Chong records still make me laugh for some reason .... go figure.
