Great Thread - I love coffee!!
Espresso or Americano when someone else makes it, and Bodum at home. No room for a pro espresso machine.

Local coffee: 49th parallel, JJ Bean, Revolver and Matchstick.
49th Parallel has the best decaf in my opinion.
I'm biased to places with good decaf.
All so good. Also Artigiano, Elysium, and the cafe's at the VAG and PacRim are quite good too.
I sometimes plan my day around where the good cafe's are.

Mmmm. Coffee.

glad to hear everyone has their favourite coffee(s) as there's different flavours for different folks! not sure why some would care so much or criticize what others like

Milano is my have coffee. Their medium roast pour over is awesome. For espresso, their La Futura is sublime. For ground coffee to take home, their Conca D'Oro is great .

Love my coffee. Can't imagine starting/continuing my day without it.

Sweet Bree's Matchstick suggestion reminds me that I mean to check that place out. Heard amazing things about it. Maybe Matchstick WITH Sweet Bree......yummy :)

Milano is good, but I think it depends on the location.
of the 3 locations, I like the one on West 8th Ave for
their consistency in making my espresso.

recommend Matchstick also for both coffee and baked goods.
Chinatown location has more seats available than the
one on Kingsway.

mark Elysian on your list also.

I just got to stop walking into Starbucks for my yearly visit and saying..."I just want a coffee, no fancy shit...just a coffee"....Angela, I have no idea what all that stuff means, or have a clue what it would taste like.
Why limit yourself to whatever they serve at Tims? I like a cup of good ol black coffee, full bodied and strong enough to make your hair vibrate...but as with anything there's variety. No need to have a fancy one....espresso is not for everyone, some can't handle it...but coffee brewed with different techniques and roasts, different origins of beans. Brazil coffee is good, but Ethiopian, or coffee from Java all have different taste characters depending on soil content, rain fall amounts, etc.

Starbucks ain't the only alternative...don't know what they have in kamloops, but I'm sure there's life beyond the double double.

Kamloops has many options....But it's actually several hours away for me, and thats on a good sunny day with summer driving.
I think Agentwhite just likes the finer things in life, and isn't above pointing them out to everyone standing around him....I'm not speaking for anyone else here, but it doesn't get under my skin.
Although I am used to people veiwing me as rough around the edges, uncultured, and half wild.

Anybody who actually likes Tim's Coffee really doesn't know/understand what good coffee really is IMHO. It's brown water at best without any flavour whatsoever. I can pour you a cup of that from the water residue from my espresso machine that is there after a few days use prior to me backwashing and cleaning it out

Look for roasters who dry roast their beans slowly is my suggestion. Starbucks being a high production house does a wet roast i.e. higher temperatures and more volume out the door because its a lot faster than a dry roast. Roasting wet/high temp does burn more of the proteins that produce the flavour that you find in the oils in the bean.

I salivate when I see videos like this one :D

It's all about the crema.

True dat. Hideous excuse for coffee is Hortons.

Manni, I agree. West 8th is the most consistent. I live closest to the one on Denman but frequent the West 8th and Gastown ones quite a bit. West 8th is the most consistent and the baristas there are great. Personable and they know their stuff. I think it's the best because Turk the owner spends the most time there :) Do need to check out Matchstick and Elysian for sure. On the list

I had a good chat with Brian when he opened the West 8th location.
a really nice guy, and you can tell he's a craftsman when it comes to
producing the perfect bean. showed me a demo of the roasting machine
at the back of the shop. it was an eye opening and educational afternoon about
coffee to say the least.

and the view of the mountains and city skyline is remarkable, considering
it's on the south side of the bridge.

Milano is alright. I have been pondering about taking a coffee tour trip to Brazil or even Colombia. Anyone here been?

So without having to hop on an airplane to get really great coffee

Milano on W 8th

Cafe Artigiano multiple locations

and a few old school cafes on Commercial Dr are the ones I would venture to specifically to have coffee with a friend.

Really needing a coffee fix; I would get a triple grande or quad vente latte from Starbucks. Their espresso shots are not good and need to be masked in foamy milk.

Otherwise it's my cassa

I know what you mean.
as hard as it was trying to break away, I couldn't help but
admire the man's obsessive nature about the subject.

hmm…I think it's time for a cup or two.

I have been to Brazil Agentwhite. I was in Minas , they do mostly mining there for various minerals. It's not very safe in that area, but they do have good coffee...And if you like dark skinned women, they love light coloured hair, and blue eyes.
