They got him for a conditional draft pick and some guy playing for the belleville bulls = nothing.....I guess that makes sense he's the invisible man now.....maybe Chelios will remind him where the front of the net is!!

The Detroit Red Wings emerged as riverboat gamblers Tuesday, willing to take a chance on Todd Bertuzzi, who has been out almost all season with a bad back.

Bertuzzi, a classic power forward, will give the Red Wings some of the grit and sandpaper believed to be missing for the team. He was obtained for a pair of conditional picks. Detroit will send a conditional pick – either a first-, second- or third-round selection – in this year’s draft and a conditional second-round pick in next year’s draft to obtain the services of Bertuzzi, who is just a year removed from being one of the most coveted players in the League.

The picks are conditionally tied to the performance of the Red Wings in the playoffs, as well as Bertuzzi’s playing availability in the postseason.

The 32-year-old Bertuzzi was the centerpiece of this summer’s blockbuster deal that sent franchise goalie Roberto Luongo to Vancouver in exchange for Bertuzzi, Alex Auld and Bryan Allen.

But Bertuzzi ran into back troubles in late October, eventually undergoing surgery for a herniated disk on Nov. 2. Bertuzzi had seven points in seven games before getting injured.

Bertuzzi is back to skating and says he is ready to return to the NHL grind, but has not been going 100 percent for the Panthers in practice before Tuesday’s trade. Yet he must have shown enough in his comeback to convince Detroit GM Ken Holland to roll the dice to keep up with all the aggressive teams in the Western Conference.

Bertuzzi, when healthy, is among the most difficult forwards for opposing defensemen to deal with down low. He has 224 goals and 536 points in 717 NHL games and is just three seasons removed from his benchmark 46-goal season with Vancouver.

The addition of Bertuzzi helps further remake Detroit’s attack, which was impacted by Monday night’s acquisition of third-line forward Kyle Calder from Chicago. Most likely, Bertuzzi will play the right side on Detroit’s second line, joining Robert Lang and Mikael Samuelsson.

As it stands right now, Bertuzzi can probably kiss those long term big money contracts goodbye. I wouldn't be surprised to see him have to sign a Kariya or Selanne-type deal for one year at a million next year to prove himself. I for one haven't written him off yet and if he got his head together could still be one hell of a hockey player. He has also made the comment, that you never know, he could still return to Vancouver next year - for a hell of lot less money that is, and assuming Nonis would take him back.

Great acquisition by the Wings with little downside risk

Even though Berts hasn't really done much in the playoffs before...Talk about having the ball in your court. He goes from a bottom feeder team playing in hockey wasteland to a stanley cup contender. If he plays well down the stretch and the Wings go deep in the playoffs, lookout. Huge long term deal to be had. Play poorly or gets hurt again, then he'll have to settle for a 1 yr deal for less $$$

Something else to consider: Berts played his best hockey with Nazzie and he's been around the twins and Ohlund. Now he goes to team sweden and might even get a chance to play with Zetterberg who's a similar type of player to Nazzie. Datsyuk wouldn't be a bad match either, as he tends to really thrive with pure goalscorers (Brett Hull and Shanny)

The only thing to consider is that he only plays well in a contract year which this is and if anyone can save his ass with the rest of the season and the playoffs and make him look like a player it's the lineup in Detroit!!

Don't disagree with you at all, so don't be surprised if Bert makes a big splash for the Wings, assuming he's near full recovery.
If a guy like Holmstrom can bang in 25-30 goals a year with all the talent around him, then surely Berts can knock in 40 at the very least

no one ever doubted Buttoozi's talent, just his attitude
and committment ...

maybe in Detroit he will become the premier player he was
touted as being ... but he's the one who has to demonstrate
that he can do it night after night.

ironically, he would like to come back to van ... but if he
plays hot his price goes up so then he can't ... if he plays
like a bum then he will come cheap but who will want him?

what a soap opera!
