I usually hate when politcians do things like this, but the Liberals had already conspired to not put a speaker forward, so it would make the government as shaky as possible, so given that sleazy move, Plecas taking the job gets a pass from me.

Parliamentary tradition is the party taking power contributes one member as the Speaker. The Speaker may cast a deciding vote in favour of the Government should the need arise.

Plecas was out of favour with the Libs and was at the his end of career because he spoke out against Christy. This was an astute career move for him. The Green NDP must be dry humping themselves over this parliamentary win.

I think that the liberals are probably secretly pleased as well. They won't want to force another election until they have their leader in place, next year. Now they have an excuse for not defeating the government in the House.

They couldn't have anyway. The Libs (ahem, Cons) lost any hope when the Greens movd in with their new best friends, plus with Clark resigning and crawling back into the woodwork, that's another seat gone until at least a by-election, which I think doesn't have to be called for nine months.

could be about getting down to the business of governing the province and doing what's best for the voters (sometimes happens)

Apparently the word is, Plecas had a falling out with them at the party gathering where Christy stepped down - he had a grudge with them, and they with him. Plecas is in a very safe seat, with the only danger being that the BC LibCons might have dumped him at nomination time in favour of someone else. So this move by Plecas may be payback. Either way, it gives the NDP some unexpected breathing room.

That's a very good strategic move.

I think he saw himself as AG etc with two degrees in Criminology and Masters in Social Sciences.

Still, it wouldn't matter since his falling out with the Liberal leadership. His time was done as a Lib.

And with that all the talk about NDP government coming up short in key legislature votes comes to rest.
I had a feeling months ago somebody from the Lieberals was going to break ranks.
My thoughts were Sullivan, or Plecas both had a lot to gain and not much to lose by stepping up.
This is mostly good news for the province, stable government, no general election for a while
