Just saw on the news that now the deficit may run up to $1.5 b. The finance minister claims the number for the budget comes from the federal minister and they don't 'massage' the number and just present was is given to them.

Congrats on those who voted Liberal.

And do you think under the NDP, that number would have been better? If it was NDP, that number would be double...

Yes, the Olympics were initiated when NDP was in power but regardless, the whole city wanted it.

If NDP were in power now, the province would be so mismanaged

Looks like a huge Fudget Budget.

Much bigger than the NDP's, but since it is the Liberals, they get off scotch free. They lied to the province to get elected.

If the NDP was in, it would be front page news, and no one would forgive them. Talk about a double standard.

We should all be objective and call it what it is.

I hope one day a group of real police in the VPD or RCMP will hold some asset investigations on these politicians. But of course thats there career/salary in jeopardy.

lol, what? So put NDP in power and we won't be in red?

This is more reason for keeping the Liberals in power was important. If today we have NDP, they would just brush their hands and say, well, sorry, Liberals put us in this mess so that's why we're fucked and we can't do anything about it or it will take a billion years to fix this.

Like the Liberals did when the NDP were thrown out in 2001.

Who cares if the Liberals or NDP are in power. The bottom line is that we can expect higher taxes soon.

With El Nino predicted (warmer winter in N. America) we can expect natural gas prices to stay depressed or even go lower. Nat gas exports have been a cash cow for BC.

I'm not eager to see the final bill for the Olympics either.

Actually, the NDP was running the province in the black...and had been... for a while before Cambell took over. What happened? Ever since, Cambell has driven us into the red... he did the same thing to the city of vancouver when he was mayor.

Not that he's really stopped being mayor of vancouver... with all the effin' around and money spending on frivolous things that he does "for" vancouver.

It's possible the NDP would have us in the red, possibly more... but chances are, they'd be spending that money on the WHOLE province... for actual infrastructure that the WHOLE province benefits from... and it would be local workers and businesses (whole hearted patronage admittedly) who would benefit from from that expense... rather than german/american/multinational companies that simply export cash wholesale from Canada for every contract that we give them.

*shrug* Global competition is good... most of the time... but when your country is reeling in a recession, you should be spending and keeping those dollars at home... keeping voters employed.

When times are good, then encourage local companies to be competitive and skilled. THe good times are when it's great to be canny with public money, maybe even penny pinching, just to ensure that you're OK when the pendulum swings the other way.

The only reason now to keep Gordo in power is that at least he has to take credit for his eff ups and over expenses (although, some how I think he'll blame the NDP)... the only problem being that he's going to retire and the problems will fall on the next poor bastard that leads the Liberals in his place. Meanwhile, slick dick's legacy is intact and he never has to answer for his financial crimes (as usual).

Either way, if another party gets into power, the libs will pin the prevailing econimic crap on them, rather than take responsibility... because that's what Canadian Liberals do (pass the buck). :|

The whole city did not want the Olympics, only a tiny 62% of the population wanted it compare to 94 and 96% with the other cities.
We are in the red despite Campbell cutting back on services, closing court houses, adding fees to things that use to be free like BC Parks, wasting money on the RAV Line etc...

Call me ignorant but all I ever heard is how Translink is trying to put their greedy hands into everyone's pocket at the same time to fund the transit system and not once did I heard anyone try to go to 24 Sussex Dr. and demand back our share of the gas tax to be used to fund the transit system. How much do we pay in gas taxes and any other tax on top of a tax and how much have we gotten back?

I vote to separate BC from Canada.

I forgot we don't have to vote on separating BC from Canada, Campbell can just sell it or privatize the entire province.

How many schools did he close?

At least with the Carbon Tax he admits it's tax but not with the so-called levy for TVs,computers and whatnot. I don't know about the rest of you but I was finding ways to get rid of my old tech stuff without have to pay an extra tax on it.

Not until Cambell is long dead... he's seen personally to that. Hell, you could fit the cost of all 3 fast ferries (another eff up, but Cambell could've sold them for scrap for more than he sold them to whatsitsname group) into the cost of the convention center alone.

Can someone really tell me what was wrong with out old convention center? Imagine how much nice it could've looked with a sprucing up at less than a quarter of what's been spent on the new one.

Ridiculous... the current government has no concept of money management.

Translink? Puppets installed by Gordo to do his bidding... so the fact that they can't manage money properly and are always clamouring for more is no suprise. They are there to follow orders and to fall on their swords when something goes wrong. Gordo loves his attention deflectors.

Really, you do recall that he replaced the predecessor to the translink board because they were duly elected, were responsible to the people, and disagreed with him over the RAV line.

The man is on a power trip unequalled in BC history. At least Bennet tried to spread the spending around the province... at least Vanderzalm was a sociopath, but managed to actually do some good. Gordo is sane and doing all of this.... I wish there was a way to bring criminal charges against him and his ruling party.

Actually this is good, what were you doing with them before? Passing it on to someone else does not count. It's just making it someone else's problem eventually. Now Encorp takes it and with 'blind faith' ;), they are properly recycled and disposed off instead of being in a landfill :)

The RAV line is awesome. Don't know why people are so against it. It was painful but it was needed. Now we need them to force a UBC line along broadway! That Broadway corridor is a complete mess...

No government is perfect.

If he left some schools open - "Why is that school still there? There's only 30 kids, so having 6 teachers, 2 vice-principles, 1 principle, and a legion of cleaning staff is fiscal mismanagement!"
Close those schools - "Damn Gordo and his dictatorship! Making union staffs lose their jobs and ruining those kids' future"
Pushing the RAV line - "Total waste of money, destroying businesses, ruining property value, and unnecessary! Bankrupting the province/city for this pet Olympic project"
If there was no RAV line - "Campbell is sucking up to big oil, purposefully not allowing any alternative modes of travel. Bad for the environment."
Promoting the Olympics - "Party for the rich only! Waste of taxpayers' money. Better spent on healthcare and other social services. Construction projects ruining people's property, businesses, etc. It isn't EXPO."
If he didn't support Olympics - "We're missing out on a good opportunity. Tourism, business, construction.... all will create jobs and flow of income. It will be just like EXPO!"
Increase spending - "Destroying capitalism, hurting businesses. Debt will increase and it will be bad for future generations. He obviously doesn't know how to fiscally manage the books."
If he doesn't increase spending - "Gordon Campbell doesn't want to give more money to policing, health care, educations, etc. He's cold and heartless and only cares about his Corporate overlords!"

No matter what... Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Schools:
Actually, the closing of the schools more equates to 30+ students shoved into a room sized made for 20 (the new school rooms are tiny). So a few teaching jobs are lost (unfortunate), the biggest issue really is that those kids going through are now having a substandard education forced upon them by Gordo and his minions.

Also,up until a year or so ago, they were required by law to use the cheapest bid possible for any renovation or new construction... which of course was backed up by an iron clad gaurantee from the cheapest bidder.

At my fathers school, a newly installed light came crashing down... narrowly missing a child. But don't worry, the contractors came back and installed it correctly shortly thereafter. After all, safety and a proper installation is at the top of Gordo's priority list. Kids are expendable and don't vote.

No RAV Line:
Instead, we'd have an evergreen line and probably an extension to the surrey/KG line. It would service more people and take more cars off the road.

However, we are now servicing a route that while busy, won't have a huge traffic reduction due to the line... and I'm not at all sure how many people will take the sky train from the airport...since you still need a bus (or a very long walk) to go from the airport sky train station out to the airport.

Had they run it all the way to the airport, I might support it more. Richmond did need a rapid transit solution, but it was more of an after thought to the RAV line.

Missed Olympics:
This one is very debatable. As I recall, alot of people in the city of Vancouver were opposed (although it passed) to it. Nobody else even got the chance to vote on it (like, everyone else in the province)...even though they will help foot the enormous bill.

The boost to Vancouver tourism could've been achieved at a lower cost, through making the city more pedestrian and bike friendly, through city beautification, and through work on homlessness reduction. Tied in with better advertising, Vancouvers natural beauty and our tourism and businesses would've had a healthy (if not grossly profitable) income for many years to come.

This boost will be a large one for 2-3 weeks, followed by a several year minor boost that is really suspect in its rosy projection, especially given the current economic climate.

I will admit that many jobs have been created and companies made more profitable by the olympic boost. However, the housing boom had a larger effect on the economy... comparatively.

Increased or Decreased Spening:
IF he wasn't spending it on frivolous things, if he actually paid attention to the people that elected him... fewer people would have issues with him spending in a recession scenario. In fact, spending is something a government SHOULD do in a recession.

The problem is, he spent tons of cash on silly things when the times were good, and now he's cash strapped for money when he needs it most. Also, alot of his spending habits are funded in part from cutting social and public services...all the while, demanding no such reduction from crown or private sectors paid out of public funds.

Gordo's catch phrase should be "there's a sucker born every minute".

I have to agree with you on this. The Lower Mainland is UGLY during the dark, rainy winters. If we get a warm winter, as is forecast, there will be no photo ops of the snow covered North Shore mountains on a crisp morning.

Winter is the WORST time to showcase our beautiful city.
