Like many corporations in this day and age, BC Ferries launched a contest asking the public to submit names for its three new vessels. And like other well-intended campaigns, it has been hijacked with hilarious results on social media.

British Columbians are more than aware that the company continues to struggle with maintaining service and routes, while cutting costs and capping fare increases.

Many of the current ferries' names start with Queen or Spirit, which people have been using as inspiration. The suggestions posted to the BC Ferries Facebook page include:

Spirit of the WalletSucker
S.S. ShouldveBeenABridge
Queen of the Overpriced
MV Corporate Pork
Queen of No Other Choice
Queen of the Cash Cow
The Christy Clark Ark
Incompetence Afloat

We'd like to award extra points for those who came up with poetic groups of three, like "Highway Robbery, Privatized Backfire, Rip Off," and "Dewey, Cheetham and Howe"

much more here...... : http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2015/05/20/bc-ferries-name-contest_n_7339454.html

I took a business trip for 3 days into Victoria, with a day on one of the Gulf Islands.
Being a trip I could write off, I kept all my receipts, for ferry, food, lodging, parking and whatever.
When I got back home I was adding them up in my office and the total was around a thousand dollars, give or take.
When I was entering the trip into my expense book, Claire Newel was on BCTV...Promoting an all inclusive trip to Mexico for 950 ,with taxes included....Chances are, it probably wouldn't have rained the entire time I was there either.
When you can travel to South America and stay all inclusive for 8 days for less than it costs to spend 3 days in your own province, and Ferry rides are the highest cost of the trip...I have to shake my head.

This isn't funny

These useless Union run government farces are an abomination. Transliink Skytrain was down like 12 hours due to a birds nest...yes it's true, please give me another 600 million.

Exactly! That is precisely why I come here (well that and the booty/booby threads). It's always interesting to follow the connections between the posts to see how they veer off the road, across the ditch and deep into the woods. Of course I do my part on occasion to add to the variety around here. Yes, this thread on the "Dynamics of Interpersonal Communication via Internet Forums in Today's Society" was a good call, vancouverman. :thumb:

sooo.... 12 hours of actual commuter down time in...how many years? There was that kerfuffle last year, a computer problem was at the heart of it. Some upgrade, I don't know who installed it (lowest bid most likely).

Our trains do stop running FAR too early in the night, considering they are automatic. I will take that over a private enterprise cutting corners on safety and maintenance, all the while charging outlandish rates... just because it's a public cash cow for them. You do realize that the unionized labour is CHEAPER in the long run? Right? Every time we've switched to private enterprise, the costs have sky rocketed for the province.

Sorry, the tax paying citizens... you and me. And god damn it, I don't want to pay more taxes because some corner cutting money grubber is raping the government wallet "just because they can". I don't mind fair wages, as those wage earners will spend all their money locally. It means I can make money off of them, they have the cash to blow... they are how our economy grows. Exporting our contracts to out of province or foreign companies just drains our financial resources.

I'm tired of this failed charade of trickle down reagonomics. It's time for a change.

Thanks CJ

Tell me the last time the bus system was privately run

If they actually had to turn a legitimate profit while providing top notch service, oh sorry I'm out, been to the waterfront lately? It's run by East Indian drug lords...I'm out
