No doubt that with population comes perceived political power, however with marketable resources comes demonstrable strength.
No worries about Stephan, he's going to be too busy criminalizing prostitution, rolling out another prohibition on alcohol and closing the borders to any non-white immigrants.
If Harper wants to make inroads in Ontario and Quebec, he will have to give up something to appease them, and despite Alberta's wealth and perceived 'power' it is ripe for a good old-fashioned ass-plucking.
And with Ontario drowning in debt, and having power shortages, it wouldn't surprise me to see Harper make some deals to give up Alberta power to gain Ontario power.
We can dream all we want in the West about independance and true representation and so on, but if Harper wants to stay in power, he will sacrifice Alberta to do it.
He won't be as arrogant as Trudeau and impose a NEP, but he will trade cheap energy for political favours with the power brokers in Alberta and sell it to Ontario to ensure he can represent the Alberta powers in Ontario. In other words, powerful Albertans will sell their own kids to get power in Ottawa!
And the more wealth that Alberta accumulates the more likely such a scenario will play out, because the richer the West becomes, the easier it is to take some back for the 'good of the country'.
Let's face it, if the Liberals get back in through Ont/Que then they will bitch-slap Alberta to ruin ... Harper will have to make some deal to get energy from Alberta to Ontario and its better to deal with the devil you know than to elect a Liberal.
Will place $20 on my 'prediction'.
