I use both.

Smoker uses African Hardwood as fuel not charcoal but looks similar. I add flavour by adding mesquite, hickory, applewood etc etc depending upon what is being smoked. Cooked Low n Slow at 220 F for many hours. I did a Pulled Pork recently and it was on for 15 hours.

Propane is the best for tender meats such as Ribeyes, NY's, chicken, and planked Salmon etc.

So the answer is if you are a true BBQ kind a guy, you will own both set ups.

i have a few.. the small round ones that uses charcoal.. and having the option of adding wood chips is nice.. and i have a big stainless steel with two burners.... I also bought a smoker from canadian tire, (love smoked fish) i dont personally even use them to be honest as i have big phobias ......fear of propane tanks, And im frightned of hot burners... i was in the hospital at 16 for a week.. boiling water burn so anything really hot freaks me out.. although i do love to cook and bake its an ongoing fear im still struggling!!! have to tell myself its ok.................. its just cookies!!! !!! as for propane tanks im scared they will blow up, so i dont touch them or even go near them, i really dont.. they scare the shit out of me.., I have a close friend he loves to cook and cooks for me all the time so i really bought them for him to use in my house lol. the one that tastes the best is the round one I have .. its a smaller cheeper bbq... but the meat tastes way better. :) yep the pictue above is pretty much the one that is always used... and the wood chips you can get add amazing flavour ... hickory is my fav

I use a propane grill.

I was at the Canadian BBQ Championships at Whistler last summer and it was impressed into me that there is a big difference between BBQing and grilling.

Low and slow in a smoker is BBQ. Cooking on a grill is grilling. Don't have the patience for low and slow. Need food now, just grill it.

Cruising in my RV
Used both charcoal and propane but, haven't tried natural gas yet; Any and all BBQing and Grilling is good when it's done right.

Big BBQ Smoke-Out at Lady-Via's place!!!:p I'll bring the salmon:)

Thats a lot of bbq stuff. Instead of the smoker and saving some space; there is a little item called a smoker box which can be used in both the charcoal and gas bbq grills or make a smoker bag from aluminum foil. FYI

I use one of those smoker boxes inside my propane for adding flavour to steaks etc.

Thing is with propane is you can not get the temp down to 220F and keep it there consistently. Hence the need for a smoker with a bowl for adding water, cider vinegar and other moisture that helps the smoke penetrate the meat.

I have been using a Weber Smokey Mountain Smoker for about five years now and the end result is always amazing. I can cook a pretty damn nice steak on a propane BBQ but a smoker adds a whole new dimension to outdoor BBQ. Look up Rockin Ronny Shewchuk on google and check out his books and recipes. They are never fail recipes for sure.

My family never did much BBQ .

But the one time we did it was dig a pit out back put some blocks around it to hold up the what even you are cooking. some charcoal and wood .. let it all turn to red embers and put some slabs of beef over it some chicken on aurer . raped potato's , and corn

The old fashion BBQ no fancy stuff .. Texas style

My dad did this down in Brazil when he was young and they still do . It is called cherasco , Family and friends get together on the farm or in the nabours and every one bring some thing .. Yes I know it is what we do to with all the big fancy BBQs . The open bit just seem better.

I've always wanted to get one of these ...

The Big green Egg
The Egg looks awsome. Seen a demo of those at a retail outlet in Edmonton last year. Very pricey though, i think the model shown is over $800 but a similar model can be found at Costco for a couple of hundred less. Think it is called a Kimono.

I have propane, charcoal, and a smoker. Love them all but the propane gets used most times during the week and smoker and charcoal on weekends. Smoking boxes are great too and add some flavour.
