Ban clapping

A students’ union has replaced clapping with jazz hands in a bid to prevent people suffering from anxiety or sensory issues. The University of Manchester Student’s Union passed a resolution banning the practice at their first meeting of the year. According to the student newspaper, Mancunion, they will use the British Sign Language alternative of jazz hands so that clapping is more inclusive.

They wrote: ‘It was argued that the loud noise of traditional clapping and whooping pose an issue to students with anxiety or sensory issues. BSL (British Sign Language) clapping – or, jazz hands – would be a more inclusive form of expression.’ Sara Khan, liberation and access officer, put the motion forward in a bid to ‘encourage student groups and societies to do the same, and to include BSL clapping as part of inclusion training.’ Motions need a 66 per cent majority to pass and it was reported that there was little opposition. However a student appeared on Good Morning Britain denying that it is banned. She said they are encouraging others to consider not clapping in order to accommodate two students with sensory issues, accessibility needs and autism.

The newspaper noted that jazz hands have been widely used by the National Union of Students since 2015. University of Durham students proposed a ban of clapping and whooping saying ‘access needs of disabled students are disregarded/overlooked in terms of conference member behaviour and NUS structures’. They wanted ‘reduced cheering or unnecessary loud noises on conference floor, including whooping and clapping’ and for offenders to face ‘consequences’. They added that they feared for the ‘safety and wellbeing’ of disabled students being compromised.

Stooooopid.

Just looks like more SJW safe-space, don't-trigger-me bullshit. Hell in a hand basket, that's where we're going on that path.

Students with severe anxiety or sensory issues probably shouldn't put themselves in crowded celebratory situations if they feel they might get "triggered".
But as usual- for the sake of inclusion by ALL- a good cheer is now out of the question.
Get out the participation ribbons.....

Beverly Hills. In the Kitchen eatin' vittles.
I'm all for equal rights, gender equality, tolerance of different faiths, customs, etc. but some of this PC crap just goes too far for me.
In so many cases these days the pendulum and swung way too far the other way.
And do you notice its always the "mainstream" who often come up with these notions as a way to feel better about themselves.

But then again I'm of the opinion that if your kid is so allergic, that the mere mention of the word peanut, would kill them, maybe they shouldn't be going to a public school or anywhere public. I have a friend who's grand daughter started school this year. The parents had to sign an 'oath" saying that they would not use any peanut products at home so that there was no risk of bringing anything to school, that may even have a trace of peanut contamination.

Cheers

Are the peanut nazis the same ones who let their kids go to school without vaccinations?
How long before there is a class action lawsuit against someone's kid infecting another kid?

What next?

Everyone has to learn sign language and never speak in public ever again.

This BS is going way too far.

No, banning sex. With all of the cases of sexual harassment coming to the fore, it will be decided that too many men and women are stressed when having sex. So instead, all procreation will be done thru artificial insemination. AI works for dairy cattle, so why not humans? Of course, if it happens, this website will become of no value and possibly illegal and will have to shut down. Where will I post my crazy ideas then ;-(

I'm a little suspicious of anyone who claims "absolutely no one is looking into this/buy my book." It's right up there with "one weird trick doctors hate and don't want you to know."

The clapping thing is stupid. (Also feels a little like a clickbait article but someone out there really did this.)

Peanut allergies have escalated (for whatever reason) to the point quarantine (i.e. keep them out of public school) seems impractical.

Yeah it's real

Or, real enough for me. Once CHS is tweeting about it, that's about as real world as my world gets. First comment is really funny BTW.

Jazz hands?! But I thought white people doing jazz anything was cultural appropriation ?

Another no-win situation brought to you by political correctness.
