I know for grunt jobs and labor skills- skilled or non skilled they do background and drug test often. Do they do that with tech workers say AMZN, MSFT, APPL? Would that insult some workers right off the bat since tech workers are seen right off the bat as more classy, and upscale people anyway? Maybe they would storm out of the interview saying " are you kidding me:?

They will check your background out for tech positions, if HR is in the least bit professional. Not the least to ensure that you actually have the experience and qualifications you say you have, because a lot of people fabricate stuff like that.
I worked at a company once, where one of the senior managers who was hired in the early days turned out to be basically faking it. And from what I hear, he still doing it at other places.
