My boss bought himself a fancy import SUV last week. Being an affluent guy, he wrote a check, and drove away.
Signed, sealed delivered.
Today...more than a week later, the dealership calls. They say they are cancelling the sale. The car had been promised to someone else and the salesman should not have sold it. They could get him a new one "soon". (Not likely)
My boss told them to GTFO. They cashed his cheque, he has their signatures on the paperwork.
Car dealers are jerks.

Ordered a Tesla more than 4 months ago that was to arrive within 8-12 weeks. It’s still due in 8-12 weeks. On the plus side, this will be a 22’, sticker price is up over $3k, and there are some considerable feature and design enhancements I’ll get for the lower price. My six year old used car is worth more than twice what I was offered same time last year too. Strange times.

What? I mean W T flying F?
That dealer is detached from reality.
Your boss could say "sure, here's my selling price ... let's say 150% of what he paid them".
There are idiots out there.

I love it when they blame the salesman - the salesman doesn't actually have anything to do with the paperwork. That's all management!...

Which dealer WW? Curious minds want to know :)

The VIN number should have been in the system as "sold" the moment it was paid for, if not earlier. The dealers are the ones who want to close the deal fully, not dither. At the very least, he could not have driven it away without ICBC (or any insurance company) doing likewise with the VIN in their system, and that vehicle would be considered the purchaser's property or else the insurance transaction couldn't be completed. Dealers I know run every single deal through the sales manager and/or financing officers before it's finalized, so even if one or more sales people screwed up and did two deals simultaneously, the manager should have known that specific car was already spoken for - particularly if that's the only one of those they had in their inventory. So unless maybe there's some technicality if it was a lease and not a sale, that car the guy's property the moment the money is transferred, and it has been officially delivered; as you say, he paid for it straight-up no financing, so they can't cancel a loan they never gave. Their unfulfilled promises to someone else are not his problem.

Un-sell it? That's un-possible.

What a weird story; sounds very sketchy. (Maybe they sold him the wrong one, imported with hidden panels filled with contraband, LOL.)

That happened to me with Roland TD 15 Drumkit, roared like a Lion at them.
Took them a day to find another one shipped in from Nanaimo.

One customer was likely hesitating so the dealer sold it to a more eager buyer.
Now the first customer says he’ll pay more.
The fact that they tried this suggests that it has worked in the past.

All car dealers are sketchy. Even ones that used to be good.
I used to deal with a nice locally (Winnipeg) owned dealer. Now the franchise is owned by a big chain and has gone to hell.

Car dealerships are mostly scum. I have friends who work at them and even they agree lol. The day we can click and buy straight from the manufacturer, I'll be first in line. Glad your boss told them to fuck off and kick rocks.

So glad I got my winter car last fall before all this craziness started in the auto industry. My stable is set for at least the next 5 years unless I manage to snag "the one".

Lol!!!! This put such a big smile on my face.

Imagine you bought a car & week later realized something was missing (wrong trim, not having an add-on promised) and not on the invoice. Guess what the dealership would do. Point at the signature and tell you tough.
The shoe is on the other foot now hahaha!!!!

Tesla is a buy direct model. Doesn’t seem to be doing much for price reduction though.

The part that annoys me is the fake shortages and demand these dealers create.

Indeed. I've been saying this for years ever since iPHONES were released. It's almost a build to order if there is a large enough PO otherwise, they just cancel back orders and say too bad...

It just took me 3 months to get a windshield, never mind a car. Supply chains are fucked.
I have the same experience as you. Actually, if you don't care about the delivery fee, try to order from China's mainland directly.
They will deliver the goods to the port in 2-3 days and the ship will arrive in Canada in 2-3 weeks.
TBH, not that expensive, for many staff made in China, multiply the price of it by 2-5 to get the price you would get in a Canadian store.
So far, China is the only country whose supply chain has not suffered a devastating blow

It is hard to say. You don't know that their prices wouldn't be 20-100% higher if they had a dealer network. I put in a reservation for a Ford F150 Lightening on Ford's website. I put down my $100 deposit at what I thought was an agreed upon price, full MSRP no discount which is unheard of buying a Ford. I got a call from the dealer saying another $5000 if I want to keep my place in line.

I know the feeling. They make a deal and then change it when it suits them.

Toyota jumped the shark with their latest stunt. Remote srarters will not work unless car owner signs up for a 10$ a month subscription WTF?

Unfortunately this will be more commonplace as time goes on. It's not only Toyota. Mercedes, BMW, Kia, Hyundai are all doing the same thing with vehicle features.
Free to begin with, then subscription service after a few years.

If I read correctly that only occurs after a 3 or 5 year period. Exactly what happens with an aftermarket cell network based remote start. The remote start will always work from the key, just the cell based portion of the remote start is what you have to subscribe to. Just like GM with their ONstar that you have to pay for.

I just saw an ad for a 2008 Lexus ES. Only 55K on it. Owned by some older rich dude that didn't drive much is what the ad said.

What would be a fair price assuming no surprises when inspected?
