Does anyone know of an independant garage that services Land Rovers? I don't want to take it to the dealership and pay $110/hr for labour. Anyone?

If your like me and don't have cousins by the dozens and brother in laws and friends of friends of friends, etc.... who seem to be in any particular given industry that you need when it comes to things such as car repairs.

With that said if you don't goto the dealer, and with something such as a landrover if you can't do the work yourself, I would only trust the dealer to service the thing......then just pick any garage. Try Canadian Tire.

Reliable Mechanic

Hello Stephanie -
I'm Madame Obsessa when it comes to my cars. If I can't fix it on my own, I go to:

Art's Automotive --- (604) 879-8555 --- 636 Clark Drive

My dad used to take his cruiser there when he was VPD and they were the only garage he trusted. I'm a mechanic myself, and after checking their work when I get it back home, I've never found they charged me for work they didn't do, damaged anything, failed to alert me of other problems or touched anything without asking me first.
Very honest and much cheaper than your average dealer. They usually provide loaner cars while working on yours.
God - I sound like a commercial!
Best of luck.
Madeleine.

Ouch ouch Ouch,,,,,hitrack,,,shake your damed head for such a comment, nothing but incompetent wannabe mechanics there,I wouldn't trust them for anything but an oil change!!

Ahhh man there not that bad, I went there with my other car a few times and they did the job good enough. Plus big name place like crappy tire, if they did botch the job you can easily get it re-done till it's right.

Some of the shit shops with the most electronic car diagnostic tool they own is a trouble light are the ones that scare me. :(

Imagine, somebody complaining about 110 dollars an hour on this board. All I can say is if you don't like the job, you can always go back and have it done right at no extra cost, which is more than I can say about about other service industries.

$110 an hour...

Mr. Ed.,

That was a good point. My question for Stephanie is why do you own a Land Rover if you're complaining about the cost of maintaining it? When was the last time you went on a Safari?

Why don't get rid of that pile of junk from England and get something that suits your budget and is still practical for your needs?

There are three types of jobs: A good job, a fast job, and a cheap job. You can have any two but not all three.

Good and Fast: It's not going to be cheap. Top dollar, done efficiently and done right. And everyone is happy.

Fast and cheap: You'll save money, but chances are you're not going to happy with the work.

Good and Cheap: That's when you do it yourself, but it will likely take up your time. Or you get someone to do it when they can find time to do it.

Personally, I like it Good and Fast. And sometimes slow feels good. And then go Fast. Then slow, then good and fast, then slow, and make it cheap, and then dirty, and then go fast....and slow again...then faster...go faster....FASTER......Oh GOD.....OHHH GOD.......OHHHHHHHHHHHH...GODDDDDDD. UHHHHHHHHHH..UHHHHHHHHH....UHHHH....UHHH...UHH...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Sorry, I got off topic. What were we talking about?

Later,
bobsled.

Bobsled is right...landrovers are expensive to repair but no worries hun, i've got 2 names for you. Just tell me the year of your vehicle and i'll pm you with the info on Monday. I've always found flashing a boob knocks the price down, too.

A buddy of mine in high school worked at Tired Canadian after school, and he was told by a mechanic there to never let them work on your vehicle. Thet are good for parts though.

I can afford to maintain the vehicle and it's very practical. Compared to what was driven before, it's a dream.

There is more to this story I'm not telling you, folks. Let's just say that if it was me making the purchase, I would've had a mechanic take a look at it from top to bottom before signing on the dotted line. Never good to make purchases out of desperation. I've been bitter about it ever since.

The vehicle itself rides very well, has all the luxury accoutrements (leather, sunroofs, etc). Historically, the models mechanics have been a hit and miss. All in all, so far, not too shabby for the fastest depreciating vehicle/model.

Thank you for all your help (and judgements).

Re: My comments regarding auto repairs...

Dear Stephanie...

I should stop drinking and typing. And do more helping and less judging when I've had a few too many. That's no excuse.

Sometimes it's too easy to poke fun, and it's a rather reprehensible habit to get into. Hopefully Very Veronica can help you sort things out. She's an Angel.

However, English made cars are rather expensive to fix as you well know. And they are high maintenance by reputation, specially the higher end vehicles like Jags and Land Rovers. When they work, they work good. But they need alot of TLC.

And the point I was trying to make, amongst all my sarcasm and insolence was you should be prepared to pay top dollar to get your Land Rover fixed properly. And if you like the vehicle and it suits your need, then don't settle for less.

My apologies if I was being a silly rabbit. And I was. So there.

Later,
bobsled.

That's is very kind of you to do.

Let that be a lesson to all of you. Don't drink and type, talk, drive, and boat.

The land rover defender(not many brought into canada) and the range rover are good examples of land rovers. The discovery, well that one can have some problems, but some people haven't had any problems. If you talking about an older land rover, which from your description I wouldn't think it is. It would be an 88 or 110. Those are all like 1975 and older I think.

I find most people that complain about land rovers being bad is mainly because they had a baboon of a mechanic "work" on them. They are always saying Jags were bad, but not for the mechanics at XJ motors. They are english trained and fix them correctly.

A good example is complaints about lucas electrics. The main thing people don't get is that they use the vehicle as the ground; they don't run a seperate ground to each appliance, so you have to make sure the common ground is ok. US cars use seperate grounds for everything. Which leads to having to go through big looms of wires. Just because mechanics don't know this, they blame the electrics but really it reflects on them as not so good mechanics. They use land rovers reliably all over Australia and africa, they just know how to fix them properly. I have had to fix some interesting problems on US cars electrical systems before most times you look for electrical tape, haha. Because a mechanic before has probably cut something and messed it up.

I personally think most mechanics are bad, therefore fix things myself. The bad ones make up all kinds of storys and say its your vehicle not their incompetence. It’s good to put in the effort to find a good mechanic. You shouldn't have to go to the dealership to get good service; most mechanics in those dealerships are not most likely not factory trained anyway. You are better off doing some research to find someone that has lots of experience with your type of vehicle. Many of the problems you have, they will have seen before and therefore don't waste your money by making a small job into a big job. And like someone on here already said, never take your car to Canadian tire!!! I wouldn't even trust them with an oil change haha

Here is some where to look. http://www.roverlanders.bc.ca/ they are the land rover owners club in BC. They have web board on there to post questions.
