Even if you are in a public place, you still have the right to a reasonable expectation of privacy. That is why in Canada, it is illegal to surreptitiously take a photo up a skirt of a woman walking down the street. The law can be applied to a nude beach: a person can complain that their privacy was being violated because the photographer took the photo surreptitiously, and a sympathetic cop can charge you under the provision of the law. The defendant will have to fight the legality of the matter in court.
Key word is "reasonable" expectation of privacy. If you are already nude in public, you have lost the expectation your so-called private areas would continue to be private as they would be if you were dressed in a normal fashion.

You could take it to court, but you would lose.

Meanwhile, if you tried to take a phone from someone or threw a punch, it would be much more likely you would be charged with attempted theft or assault, not matter how aggrieved you may feel.

I like the social media solution - give them a taste of their own medicine.

drop a dime on them....tell the RCMP, that they are taking pictures of children.....that's about the only buzz word that will get them to respond......or use social media....take photos of THEM....and start a new facebook page " the Asian perverts of Wreck Beach"
This is a really really good idea.
wow, why didn't i think of that? excellent idea actually... i mean it worked like a hot damn for the hockey riots!

yup, lots of pics on facebook with commentary about where the pics were taken and why - when that shit gets back to their baabaa's they'll have them caned for wasting time at an amoral infidel's beach instead of being out earning money for the family fortune... yep, THAT'S the kinda shit i'm talkin' about... :thumb:

What happened to the decent guys of that community?

They're (obviously) not at Wreck Beach, fully clothed, taking pictures. :p

Funny thing you should mention this. A couple of friends were there over the weekend and told me they got hit on by super young (fully clothed) guys visiting from India. They just said they were lesbians (one is, the other isn't but just pretended she was lol) and chided them, saying it was rude to come to Wreck beach and stay fully clothed, just ogling women. The guys couldn't understand why there could be something wrong or annoying about that.

So I don't think your complaint is uncommon. I agree, it's pretty rude. Apparently they just think it's acceptable.

People should just make it clear that it isn't and make sure they understand their presence isn't wanted. Isn't it illegal to take someone's picture and put it online without their consent? Even if it isn't, I'm sure someone could scare the shit out of them.. You know, pretend to be a cop and mess with their heads a little. Give them a lesson.. They probably just think they've won the jackpot and telling all of their friends, and it's now become "the" thing to do on a sunny day. lol

as far as i know its not illegal to take a picture of some one in a public place if your not going to use the picture for comercial purposes

NOT True...try taking pictures at a beach or waterpark of children playing, and see what happens.

Unfortunately nothing.
See my post on the first page about Grand Beach here in Manitoba.

I was taking photos of a couple of sisters playing while I was Vic and I think the aunt got nervous and came and stood behind them so I couldn't get pics without her in them. They were just human interest shots for me, I liked the dresses and energy between the sisters, I talked to the adults after and explained what I was doing. Generally people don't mind if you offer to send them copies of the images and show them what you're doing.

But you have a point.
lol, i think the words, 'wounded tigress' would best describe the reaction of some mom's i know about a stranger of EITHER sex taking pictures of their kids - i mean we all know who karla homolka is, right?

if it wasn't for your height you might have gotten your face torn off!! ;)

Professional photographers will seek a model release for pictures they take. The distinction is that individuals captured in the image are or can be recognized. In a picture of a group of people, think a large crowded scene, it shows people but few are recognizable. So a model release is not practical or necessary. A picture of two women walking down a street, those women can be recognized by themselves and people who know them. The 'perv' pictures and video's are posted and it is possible thoses images contain features that can identify the women. These can be faces, tattoo's, birth marks scars etc. Many photographers will take what is called 'stock' photographs. These are uploaded onto websites and newspapers, magazines, marketing companies will search them looking for images that portray what they are selling or looking to illistrate. Posting recognizable pictures without a release is illegal, at the very least the images would be removed. Most websites would do so if asked. A few years ago I went into the SFU downtown bookstore, while looking around I found a bookmark. It showed a long line of Graduates walking down the steps to the Convocation Hall; in the middle of the shot was me. Very recognizable because of my height and the shortness of the persons standing infront and behind me. I showed it to the cashier and she as have others I've shown it to agreed it was me. Had I wanted to I could have required the picture be removed. I didn't because it's a laugh.

I find these 'cultural' excuses to be bullshit, they are in a country that is tolerant of other cultures to a point. They're crossing that line, if I were to go to Dubai I would be expected to cover my head out of respect to their religion and culture. I may not be expected to adopt full muslim dress but out of respect I would cover my head. This is no fucking different.
To say it's 'cultural' is to give an excuse for poor behaviour.
Miss Melody...I was NOT making excuses for these waste-of-spaces by saying it's their culture that treats women like s..t and makes males
feel entitled.Especially, the younger generation should know they're in CANADA&this b.s. behavior is NOT cool.

btw, I love ur suggestion of water-soakers,esp. with dye(preferably non-washable)

getting doused&hopefully having both clothes&camera ruined MIGHT get the message across, but these are
not Mensa candidates.

There was a situation here the other day where some creep was taking pictures of young children at Grand Beach. Close ups of their buttocks, chests, groins, etc. When the cops were called, despite finding a lot of creepy images on this guys camera of young kids because they were all clothed, the cops said he was doing nothing illegl and had to let him go.
WTF?

Here's the news story.

If someone did that to one of mine, I'd wreck their camera, then their face... fucking pedophiles....

Sorry MM, I've outgrown the frat house. There are times to fight, and times to walk away. I wouldn't think this is one to fight. As others have stated, you are at in a public location, and creepy or not, you don't get to dictate the behavior of other folks, especially when you have an obvious way out: leave. I mean, wtf? Dont like the creepers staring/snapping pics of you and your lady? LEAVE. Were they impeding your progress? Were you on your own private land? Maybe then fighting is appropriate... But intimidation and threats of violence is the tool of the Neanderthal, road-ragers and sports fans who riot when things don't go their way... Maybe you guys should move to the USA where you are allowed to "pack". Then you can deal with these little skirmishes right pronto, eh?
~shaking my head~

The pedo dudes are a whole other matter...

I'm sorry Flanders, I think you're a pretty cool dude, but if you were with a female friend and you knew this crowd of creeps were taking photos of her private bits for the purpose of posting her image, without her knowledge, on the internet and were saying such crude things about her in a language she didn't understand, would you not take a swing at them too?
I'm a woman and I'd do it. Hell, I bet I'm taller and stronger than most of them. I should go with JC down there and scare the shit out of them. I've learned that the idea of being beat up by a woman puts the fear of god in men. (that or being beat by a gay.)

Besides, I've learned that you don't have to hit someone to get your point across. Intimidation tactics (for me) work wonders, especially because I'm non-violent. Haha.

It's also illegal to "swing at someone's head", whether his friends are cowaring or not... That would be assault. You are aware that you are in Canada, right?
Not illegal if you are being threatened, which most assholes will fake to look cool in front of their friends. I have done worst in his position and gotten off with just a talking too. If you are the good guy in this situation, there will be someone in the crowd that will stand up for you should it go to court.

When you're on a nude beach, you can get up and leave, and settle down somewhere else on the beach. The only problem is, its a beach, not a building with doors. These idiots come around again and walk by with their cell phones, just like they did last year. They hold the cell phones down at arms length pretending they are just walking, but the camera lens is suspiciously pointed outwards and their arms are steady as they walk. So leaving is not a problem unless you leave the beach altogether, which means they effectively ruined the day you planned there.

My guess is you have little understanding of the problem. Sure, violence should be the last resort..... however, it is sometimes the first thing they deserve.

I think what you could do is that take your own cell phone and start recording them instead and say something in english: like I am recording a video about creeps or sth :p

Give them their own medicine....I dont know where these guys are coming from, most of the international students I met in UBC are quite decent and principled ppl.

It's pretty funny to see this thread after having the exact same thing happen to me last week.

I go to a nude beach here in Manitoba. Anyone with a camera is asked to leave. Anyone with a camera asks to take photos or takes them where other people at the beach aren't in them.

ANYONE fully clothed hanging around in a group of any race is extremely uncomfortable on a nude beach. I go to my beach alone 95% of the time so anything of that nature would creep me out and I probably would say something or contact someone to deal with the problem. I can contact people that care for the beach as well as the RCMP.

There's always stray creep types skulking around but a group of them with cameras is disturbing, wrong and totally rant worthy.

some one i know works with kids ok,

and its a big no no to take pictures of kids. even if your the kids parents staff will stop you and tell you to put your camera away,
it is simply not allowed to take pictures of kids child porn everyone is scared shitless of child porn

and some one i know was walking through an airport in the states and one of there kids took a picture and homeland security had a bird.

but like someone said there is a reasonable expectation of privacy, you are in a public place there is no expectation of privacy
if you were standing in line at safeway and some creep was taking up skirt shots of your wife or something he is in a lot of shit

but your at a nude beach

i believe this came up during the red mile the flames during their cup run so many years ago

a lot of girls were flashing their tits for throngs of men and well some of them happend to take a picture or two,
the girls were shit out of luck when it came to there rights over the pictures, you couldn't i guess use them comercially but other then that the girls had no say how there pictures were used, i guess assuming they were adults.

I can fix that for you, Kayla - I will go with you next time you go out. Sure, the sight of you naked might be what they are looking for, but I can guarantee the sight of ME naked will send them running for the hills!!!
