Recently a working girl was assaulted & once again, she doesn't wanna come forward.

As someone who's been the victim of harassment within the biz, i can tell you that it's a pain in the ass to get VPD to listen & even harder to get them to act thanks to understaffing & our joke of a justice system but it's better to make an effort than do nothing, imo.

These fucked up men who get satisfaction preying on women need to be stopped & if the victims don't come forward, the power trippy ass gets away with his behavior to potentially carry on with someone else, often with an increased sense of defiance & worse, heightening his attacks.

If the victim of the recent assault is reading this, please don't misconstrue my comments as another attack on you. I am totally sympathetic but i want to encourage you to do everything in your power to fight back including the secondary struggle of reporting.

I feel bad for your friend no one deserves to be harassed or abused. If she wont report it than it is unfortunate that this jerk will probably continue with this behavior.

If VPD doesn’t take seriously harassment reports that is a serious issues. I am not surprised that they would take this attitude. If that happened to me I would contact the police complaints commission, city hall, the Mayor, call the police chief, email the police chief (want his email?) or contact another police department maybe the RCMP somewhere else? Or all else fails call the media.

How long is it going to be when the public becomes so disenchanted with the “criminal justice” system that people start taking the law into their own hands?

The VPD are understaffed. Vice in particular only has 8 investigators. My suggestion is to get this case to Vice. Continue to file complaints until a file is opened and active.

As CLM said, file a complaint so that at least there is a paper trail. If the guy gets busted down the road the VPD may come back to other possible victims to reinforce their case.

SP Security

It really isn't worth pursuing an assault charge. Unfortunately an SP's credibility is immediately questioned in the courts.

If I were an SP I would install a pin-hole camera to record who is coming onto my premises. Mind you it would have to be discrete. Clients would not be happy to know they're being taped, but it is a trade-off.

I'm actually surprised that most 'houses' do not have on-site muscle to quietly and persuasively remove creeps. Perhaps an added 'security fee' would off-set the cost of a 'host'.

It's that kind of comment that allows violence against sex trade workers of any kind to occur and for it to stay within the walls of our little commmunity.

There has been a bit of improvement on the cases involving prostitution. Since DNA belonging to "survival" sex trade workers was found on a pig farm the VPD can't afford to have that kind of embarassment again. There are also SP advocacy groups such as PACE to aid in protection and the filing of complaints.

Well, anyway, it's nice that you still participate on the board occasionally, even though you're retired. I hope you continue to join in from time to time.

You are correct that the Police in the Lower Mainland are much more proactive about acting on violence towards sex trade workers.

The problem is that they always fish for information from the worker and often threaten the worker with other charges. There has to be seperation of the attack on the worker and other things the worker may be involved in or sex trade workers will continue to under-report sex crimes.

I for one can't understand why an SP would work as an independant, alone in her home. You never know who is going to show up at your door and what they will do. I myself would never invite strangers into my home based on one phone call, let alone get naked in front of them without knowing who they are, and I'm not even a likely physically weaker female. Aren't you girls fearful of the risks???

Very Veronica, you are absolutely right. The victim should report this attack to the authorities for the sake of herself and all the other SPs.

What if said victim has virtually no information on the UNSUB? (unknown subject) Like a vague description(that fits most pooners she's seen) and a payphone number...then what? How does that protect the other SP's?
It might not be helpful in this situation, but consider this. You file a report and tell the police exactly what happened and as much as you can remember of the guy's appearance. Since they don't really have any info, there's not much they can do. BUT let's say the offender does this again to another woman, but she has more info, then the police can put the two together and if they catch him based on the info from another woman, then they have you as a victim as well to testify against him.

So that's what I think anyway..it might not help you specifically if there's no info, but at least the police will have your report to use in the future if it happens to someone else.

A vague description from six or ten different women can make for a pretty accurate one. You may notice height and weight, someone else remembers eye colour, someone else a distinct mole or birthmark, etc. Eventually there could be a description compiled that is good enough to find and stop this guy. If no one steps up, there is no chance of that ever happening and the assaults continue.

I think CLM made a great point, after the Pickton fiasco, the police will be pretty fast to get on it. Between that and the highway of tears, they just can't afford to appear indifferent to women being assaulted or worse. However, they can't do anything if they don't know there is something going on.

Ava, for your own sake I hope you have stopped seeing people who call from pay phones. The ones who really want to see you will find a way to call you from a home or a cell phone.
And just the fact that you insist on getting their phone number will keep away the bad ones.
I use a pay phone until I establish a comfort level with the lady providing the service. I know that means I might lose out.
