Stem cell donors are urgently needed, since the pool of the above donors is extremely small. Process is pretty simple: they take the blood out of your arm like an IV, spin it through a centrifuge to extract the bone marrow stem cells, and return the blood through another IV line. It takes a few hours, and the only difficult part is that you get really cold from having your blood outside your body. They give you blankets and a heater.

All you have to do is fill out a few simple papers, swab the inside of your mouth in a few spots, package it all up and send it away. They'll follow up with a few letters and phone calls. Overall, a simple way to become part of a program and given the chance to do something really good.

Are there any restrictions similar to what Canadian Blood Services have. I believe the rules used to be that sex workers couldn't donate blood, or anybody who had sex with sex workers in the last 12 months.

For those too lasy to click the link.

We recruit healthy, committed volunteers between the ages of 17 and 35 who are willing to be a match for any patient in need. Younger donor stem cells provide better patient outcomes.

Male donor stem cells decrease the possibility of post-transplant complication. Half of all stem cell donors chosen to help a Canadian patient are male. Only 28% of the current stem cell registry is ethnically diverse and as a result, ethnically diverse patients may have a harder time finding a match.

These are the reasons why there is a greater need for male and ethnically diverse donors.
