Dominatrix chronicler notes appeal of mistresses to submissive male politicians

By Charlie Smith, April 27, 2011

Photographer Maria Coletsis's new book, Beyond the Whip: Dominatrix, features mistresses speaking in their own words.

When Canadian voters enter polling stations on Monday (May 2) to cast their ballots, they might be voting for a submissive client of a dominatrix, according to a Vancouver-area photographer.

Maria Coletsis travelled the world to interview and take dramatically staged, glossy photos of dommes.

In a recent interview with the Georgia Straight about her book Behind the Whip: Dominatrix (Fourfront Editions), Coletsis said she discovered that city centres dense with politicians, powerful bureaucrats, and wealthy businessmen have the highest number of mistresses and dungeons.

She pointed out that Brussels—which is home to NATO headquarters and the de facto capital of the European Union—“blew my mind” in this regard.

She added that London, Tokyo, Paris, Berlin, New York, and Washington, D.C., are also major centres, in contrast to a city like Athens, which does not have nearly as many dominatrixes per capita.

“The predominant client—and I asked of all the dommes around the world—seemed to be the high-in-society, powerful man, be it in a corporate environment [and] absolutely in the political environment, specifically in London,” Coletsis revealed.

The Emily Carr University of Art + Design grad said she has always been interested in subcultures, and began photographing the fetish scene when she lived in London.

Maria Coletsis discusses why she likes photographing dominatrixes.

She met a professional dominatrix who wanted pictures taken for her website, opening the door to a new world.

“I was fascinated with her, with the apparatus, with the fantasy environment that was created here,” Coletsis said.

From there, Coletsis began taking other meticulously composed images to capture the mistress’s persona.

The photographer had previously obtained a master’s degree from the San Francisco Art Institute, where she specialized in feminine identity and sexuality. And she was curious to know if the mistress’s sexuality was defined by her dominance, whether it had an impact on her relationships, and what her clients were like.

Coletsis said she was initially under the mistaken impression that meek men sought out dominatrixes.

“I didn’t really understand that it was actually the more powerful and successful,” she stated. “The more powerful these men were in society, in politics, whatever aspect of their life, there seemed to be a desire to relinquish that power and give trust to their mistress to take them to the place where they felt that they could find balance in their life.”

She witnessed powerful men in the corporate world revert to being babies or naughty boys. One of the mistresses profiled in her book talks about toilet training her adult clients. Others discuss how they punish submissives.

Coletsis said she recalled seeing one “super good-looking guy, dressed beautifully in wonderful fabrics” go into the bathroom and emerge as a dog on a leash, wearing only a thong.

“That takes a lot of honesty to be able to reveal your hidden fantasy—and it might be embarrassing or humiliating—and yet be brave enough to say, ‘I want this,’ ” she acknowledged.

Coletsis added that the man was as attractive as a GQ magazine model and had 500 people working for him.

She characterized the visits that powerful men make to dominatrixes as escapes from all the pressure they’re feeling.

“I feel it’s the only time in their life that they can relinquish all responsibility and be something they don’t have a lot of opportunity to be.”

When asked if politicians are more likely to want to venture into this lifestyle in a submissive role, Coletsis replied: “Absolutely, and always in a submissive role, because the political life is one of power, authority, negotiation. In the submissive role, you give up all that. And actually, the true submissive does not even dictate to their mistress what they want. They let their mistress take them places.”

In researching Behind the Whip: Dominatrix, Coletsis interviewed and photographed dominatrixes who live in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. They had certain things in common, despite their differences in race, culture, religion, and age.

“There was a particular type of personality,” she noted. “These women reached inside themselves to discover that they really felt a surge of fulfillment by having a dominant personality, and being able to create a lifestyle and profession by incorporating that into their work.”

Great interview and surely amazing photos, nonetheless nothing really new to be honest. Not so sure about the header suggesting we where voting for a submissive male during the election. What is that to indicate? That people in public can't be kinky or enjoy their sex life to their fullest? I have more respect to anybody in the fetish scene (open or not) who is enjoying his / her life & kink to its fullest then those vanilla folks who only claim to be so pure.
I'm a successfull business man, with a kinky wife and two kids, I do see a Mistress maybe twice or three times a year as I just can't resist the beauty and the submission to a powerful women, I like to be tied up and wear nylons - so what! Whats the big deal? I'm still a good business owner and a great father to my kids and any politician been caught with a Mistress would most likely get my vote during the next election (well depending on his party...).

Interesting. As to what politicians do in their personal life, is of no concern to me. What does matter is how they vote for or against the issues of the day. To deceive and be hypocritical comes with the territory. So, why wouldn't their personal lives follow the same pattern? Enough said.

As to why doms are located in larger cities the answer is easy: it is where the most people live. A large market is wanted by every business. Also certain cities, Vancouver being one, are known for their SPs and accordingly draw SPs to the area, whether straight, kinky, gay, TS, or otherwise.

I disagree with her assessment that doms are frequented by the wealthy and powerful. While it maybe true in some instances, people who follow the life style were exposed to it early in life or had family members, friends or others who turned to such work for purported easy money. While I have no personal experience other than what I have seen on the net, these places are usually frequented by tatoo freaks, drug abusers, and other persons with various psycological problems. Such services I suppose act as a magnet for those with inferiority complexes. Who after all wants to be defecated on, and indeed, who wants to do it as a service and play around in you know what. Ugh! The defecator needs to show superiority to boost their own feels of inferiority.

Finally, it has become more wide spread in recent years (the last twenty), due to internet exposure and fear of the spread of Aids and other diseases transmitted by sexual intercourse. I admit that my observations are subjective, but so are those of Ms. Coletsis. No doubt, the intrigue created by suggesting voters may have voted for politicians involved in such behavior is good hype for her book.

I will let you draw your own conclusions.

You are entitled to your own opinion however your statement "these places are usually frequented by tattoo freaks, drug abusers, and other persons with various psychological problem" is NOT the norm, and yes I am sure there are women in the industry who are troubled. But the majority have there heads on straight!
And when since when did tattoos become "freakish"

i am not wealthy or hold public office, i enjoy submitting to a Women's will! Even though i don't have tattoos and pretty sure i do not have any psychological problems... LOL

During the end of the interview Maria Coletsis mention a local Domme backed out of being mentioned in her book. I would love to know who that was!

just my .05 cents

If your knowledge base is solely from the internet, your perception will most certainly be skewed. JMHO.

Not to say that there aren't tattooed drugs abusers with terrible inferiority complexes in BDSM, as with every other walk of life.

My personal experience has not proven to really fit any one mould. You don't have to have any job description, nor family background, nor tattoos, nor drug dependency, nor psych issues. BDSM is a huge term, all encompassing so many different aspects. People are different. So are their proclivities. Dommes have limits, just as the sub does. Not everyone is a poo-eater or provider. It's edgeplay, and carries a lot of risk to the bottom.

Well said, Mistress Freyja...submissives come from all walks of life, while many are from lifestyles where the sub plays a leadership role in their everyday lives, and others who lead quite "normal" lifestyles who just want the freedom of giving up control. Sure I get the occasional sub with tattoos, it is not an indicator of them being a "freak" or on drugs, nor does it indicate they have psychological issues. In my personal experience, those involved in the lifestyle are usually quite intellectual and well-mannered, have a lot to offer the world, and have mastered any addictions they have had in their lives. That does not mean they are saints or do not ever drink, but they are not freaks and I do not see many people under the influence of drugs coming to my door! One criteria for seeing subs is that they arrive sober! Very important within bdsm safety practices, safe, sane and consensual!

For the one who has never never seen a Dominatrix in real-life, not ever been involved in the lifestyle, I will have to completely disregard your comments and assumptions into the nature of a submissive. "Such services I suppose act as a magnet for those with inferiority complexes." That, to me, is like the kettle calling itself black. Being a Dominatrix is not "easy money", it takes a lot of dedication, sincerity, compassion and strength of character...it took me a few years to train and decide I wanted to be a Dominatrix. As for "defecating" on people, it's a hard limit for me, personally, and for many Dommes, as it can be very harmful to the sub.
