I enjoyed the thread on who will you vote for, but then driving back from the lake today I saw suporters on an overpass with baloons and signs and it got me wondering how many people actually do vote.

I remember Howard Stern once got a councilwoman elected by using the "idiot vote". In other words, encouraging his listeners to vote. I have always wondered how many of us "idiots" can't be bothered to vote(I'm guilty).

So this is a simple yes you are definately planning on voting or no, you're not, ok ok I guess I can do a third of "I may decide last minute".

God help me but I don't even know when the vote is, someone please enlighten me. Yah, heeeey how come there are a million commercials/signs yet the where and when of it isn't important?

By mail you say? I vaguely recall getting a card in the mail but I think it was for an old tenant, however I did fill out the box when I filed income tax so maybe one will still come.

Voting by mail sounds awesome actually, maybe I will vote after all? Maybe the Marijuana party will come through? Inshalla??? Ok, I won't get my hopes up...

I pledge that one day I WILL organize the "idiot vote" in apropriate chatrooms etc, and get the Marijuana Party elected. When's the next election after this?

your designated polling station HFS
Thats the part I have trouble with, it's usually some obscure school or hospital, but now that I live in downtown Vic, maybe there is one within walking distance? Oh and are there a lot of choices in different categorys and such? Do I need to study up? Also one more question, will it clearly state which candidates belong to which party? Cuz I have no idea who the candidate for the Marijuana party is.

You beat me to it HFS,

Massagegirl, glad to see that you're gonna make it out and place your "X" :)

Although some might call your choice a wasted I vote, I prefer to think of it as your right to make your choice

I'd also call it a protest vote of sorts, in that neither of the big 2.75 parties (Tories, Liberals, .35 for the Bloq and .40 for the NDP) are worth your support.

I'm myself am in Anne McLellands riding, and it's an easy choice, either yeah or nay. No real mystery here, I'm an Alberta boy, lived through the NEP, and will "Never Forget" ;)

Congrats on getting out there!

I'm in Annie's riding too, but I'm too young to remember the NEP. ;) So I still have a tough decision.

Wolverine,

We'll have to talk tomorrow, and it is NOT a tough decision!

Damn, I wish I could forget that time, worked for the banks doing collections etc., forclosing on widows, throwing children on the street, orphans to the coal mines, pets to the labs...

Worst part, I was good at it :(

If you don't like the main stream parties, this would be a good election to vote for a fringe party which really reflects your views. The more votes they get, the more money they get to campaign with next time and the more pressure will be put on the government to go to a system of proportional representation. The Greens could get a lot of milage this way.

Perhaps, and I am more aware now of what happened back then, unlike when I was a geeky teenager at the time.

But I would like to say that was in the past, and I'm more concerned about now. The people who came up with the NEP aren't there anymore. Most people don't take decisions from 25 years ago into account when voting, just like Americans don't consider Watergate when they vote for Republicans. Like them or not, the Liberal party's policies and faces have changed since then, including a shift to the right.

I should also add that they have had the past 10 years to restart the NEP if they wanted to, but that never happened. Today, the NDP are more likely to re-implement a similar program, since they are more akin to the Liberal party of the Trudeau days than the Liberals of today.

True enough Wolverine,

I just worry about a carbon (aka Koyoto) tax coming down the pipeline...

As voting for the fringe parties, besides being a protest vote, I'd completely forgotten about the funding aspects.

Maybe the greens will get in enough votes and no longer be excluded from the debates in the future.

Hah! An Alberta boy saying something positive about the greens, who'd a thunk it?

If you really want a protest vote, and because it is good to exercise your right to vote, why not spoil the ballot? Just put a little happy face in every box beside each candidate. But at least you'll be voting. The more spoilt ballots there are, the more they will realize that there is something wrong with our election system.

Vancouver - sort of
Voted already as gonna be busy E Day working at one of the polls.

If you haven't registered yet, you can do so on E Day but be prepared to spend some time waiting in line. Don't forget to take your ID - BC driver's licence is best but lots of other options. Need to verify your residence.

Check elections.ca for more info, you can even plug in your postal code to find your electoral district then plug in your address to find actual voting location. :)

Right You Are Butthead,

But a spoiled ballot wouldn't help any of the fringe parties cross the "number of votes casted" threshold and thus be entitled to federal funding.

Think of the message the greens or mj party could get out with a few peso's.

So, I'd rather see a vote for any other party rather than spoil my ballot.

In my case, I have no option, it's a two person race, and the last election was decided by barely 1,000 votes.

Yeah they are all the same, but a loss at the polls speaks volumes...

Have a Great Weekend folks!
