It's incredibly difficult to find a cure for the flu mainly because the little buggers mutates so damn quickly and evolves in parallel to the human immune system.
I think the common flu shots are based on some predictive algorithms that analyses previous flu strains to come up with the "most likely" flu strain that would evolve. Obviously you won't know how well the predictive program is till the next flu season
If there is a pandemic of some killer flu strain like the old spanish flu ... we would all be in big trouble.

Animals, besides birds, and humans have died from the disease so far. Tamiflu is the best available defense against the current form of the virus, and has saved lives. Govts. have stockpiled it because it is the best known defense at this time. If a pandemic were to happen, it would take in the neighborhood of 6 months to develop a vaccine from the latest virus strain. That's enough time for a few million people to kick it. So wouldn't stockpiling the best drug available be a rational thing to do? Sure. Only a handful of people have died so far. That is because the virus cannot jump between humans yet. The day that happens, you'd better start praying. Read up on the Spanish Flu of 1918, History does have a way of repeating itself. And check out the WHO website. Those statistics are real, not made up by some conspircy theorist wack with a keyboard.

Re: it doesn't even cure the common flu. It is my understanding that there has never been a cure found for "any" virus, including the common cold. We only try to alleviate the symptoms.

whether the drug will help or not i don't know but i am not surprised by the fact that some gov't official is reaking the benefits from there own policies in there private lives. back in the 18 century or so the only benefit to being a gov't official was so that you could help your close friends and make money on the backs of the regular citzens
