Suspicious bets on “Apprentice 2” pulled up offshore wagering line

Offshore e-gambling website BetWWTS.com suspended bets on the second season of NBC's The Apprentice referring to an "unusual betting pattern" focusing on only two contestants. The unusual betting stream resulted in high stakes reaching the casino's maximum $300, reported Realitytvworld.com.

"We don't know if this is some kind of link to the contestants or some way involved with the production. When this has happened before, it's because someone has known the outcome," said BetWWTS.com wagering director Stuart Doyle.

The company has already experienced similar problems related to three former reality shows. It stopped accepting bets since the subjects of the unusual wagering ultimately proved to be either the winner or finalist of their programs. Back in November 2002, BetWWTS.com suspended wagering on the Aaron Buerge-led edition of ABC's The Bachelor. At that time the gambling site received a large number of bets from Springfield, MO (Aaron's hometown) favouring Helene Eksterowicz. At the time, BetWWTS reported that it was receiving applications for new accounts from Springfield at the rate of nine per minute. ABC denied that the identity of the woman selected by Aaron had leaked, however, as Bachelor viewers are well aware, Aaron did indeed present Helene with his final rose at the conclusion of the series -- although they ultimately broke up only weeks after the program's finale aired.

Last year the incident was connected with CBS's Survivor, when Pearl Islands winner Sandra Diaz-Twine received numerous wagers from Vancouver, British Columbia, before the first episode even aired. The same case happened during the Survivor. The Amazon after it alleged to have discovered that several CBS employees had been placing maximum bets on two particular contestants (unlike The Bachelor, Survivor winners are only determined in the program's live finale, with the program's filming ending with only the determination of the two finalists.) Security personnel from BoDog Sportsbook & Casino claimed to have discovered that four individuals had all been wagered the maximum amount on the same two contestants for the three previous Survivor editions and had been right on the final two contestants every time. The gamblers proved to be correct a fourth time, as the contestants they placed their bets on, Jenna Morasca and Matt Von Ertfelda, did indeed prove to be Survivor: The Amazon final two contestants.

According to BetWWTS, the two Apprentice 2 contestants receiving the unusually heavy betting were Jennifer Massey , a 30-year-old married attorney from San Francisco, CA and Kelly Perdew, a 37-year-old single software executive from Carlsbad, CA. Just like Survivor, The Apprentice concludes filming with the selection of two final contestants, with the winner announced via a live finale. Nevertheless the company didn’t reveal any obvious ties of the Apprentice 2 contestants to the state. "When we see a lot of bets with $300 then that's very suspicious," said Doyle. The usual bet was fixed at about $25 rate.

The company expressed its doubts concerning the restoration of lines on previously filmed reality shows. "We are considering not offering betting on reality shows that have been pre-taped. It simply seems impossible not to have to suspend them very quickly." "We'll still pay the individuals already involved, but we watch the show with maybe a little more inside information than the average viewer." claimed Doyle.
