This week the Canadian Government finally did the right thing and offered a formal apology to First Nations people for forcing them into residential schools. But this should not be the end of the matter. This should be the begining of a healing process. Many victims still suffer from year of abuse and even though this wrong was formally acknowledged by Canada it is not enough for some. Many First Nations people have been tramatized to the point were it has ruined there lives and since our government has acknowledge the wrong done it must also be forth coming with more financial aid to the victims. Words of apology are worthless unless supported with real action on this issue

Well Fudd, since you feel this strong about it I'm sure you will be willing to donate whatever money you have to help provide this financial aid, and whatever time you can spare from your activist group, to take real action. Neither I, nor any of my ancestors where in this country when this was the official policy of the government, which is probably true for most Canadians. If you or your ancestors were part of it, then you pay for it. Why should I clean up your mess.

A total of 93,000 applications have been received for payment of $10,000 for the first year spent in the schools, and $3,000 for each subsequent year. About 65,000 cheques averaging around $28,000 have so far been issued.

Many others have opted out of the massive compensation deal - expected to ultimately top $4 billion in damages and healing programs - that was reached under the former Liberal government and implemented by the Conservatives.

I have a well to do native customer that about 3 years ago
when discussion of lawsuits for compensation came up had a
long talk to me.He grew up in the residential school system and said it
saved his life and he got an education.His word were that "it was the best
thing that happened to me" and he credited his life success to it. Fast
forward to this year and now it was a terrible experience and he is going
in front of the tribunal to state his abuse stories. This way he expects to
get $150,000 or so in compensation. I'm not sure if it was the lawyers that
got to him but I know they spoke with all school attendees they could. I
don't disagree that there was some abuse but its become the lottery
for them.

If you think that your success only occurred "honestly" through your own "hard work" and would not have occurred without the wealth created through the takings of these peoples lands, you are delusional or else ignorant.

I exist as a European Canadian...someone who didn't know the existence of his father's entire family lineage until just a few years ago. Prior to a few years ago I would never have known that I was anything but French by my father and Dutch by my mother.

I cannot relate to a First Nations person at all one iota other than through empathy. I work as a professional in downtown Vancouver and earn an excellent living, and no one who looks at me would ever guess I was anything but European.

I never found out what my father went through (or his father or father's parent's) went through until a few years from now. Every shred of knowledge about that side of the family has been 100% completely suppressed from anyone (even including a name change) because of the absolute shame, abuse and poverty that my father and his parents experienced from their past.

I refuse to divulge any more details for you. You are not worth the effort.

I will never seek compensation of any kind because I cannot relate to those of the First Nations. My father, despite growing up in abject poverty, somehow found the inner strength and guidance to steer his children right - and I know for a fact that most people on this planet do not have the sheer strength and will that this man possesses.

But I can see the haunting that exists in his eyes and within his soul...despite the fact that he has never spoken about it.
