So I have pretty much the creepiest roommate ever. I've been trying to find somewhere new, but it seems like everything in Downtown is ridiculously expensive. Anyone know of anywhere not completely awful, and not super expensive? Being a student blows.

What's so creepy about him/her? Does he/her go into your room at night and masturbate while watching you sleep?

You can try looking in North Burnaby check out the SFU website. Lots of accomodations for rent because of all the student renters and it's reasonably close to downtown.

I just signed a lease on a downtown apartment last tuesday. It's a crazy market for rental housing right now.

Anything in a decent neighborhood, particularly in the downtown peninsula, goes incredibly fast (like within hours of advertising). And, of course, theres a premium to live downtown or kits beach.

There *is* decent stuff out there at a "reasonable" price, but for some reason, I did not find them from large commercial operations (eg. Hollyburn, Gateway, Amacon, etc.) I'm finding the better values come from small independants, or privately owned condos rented directly from the individual owner.

Well, I'm babysitting my friends cat while he's in Korea, and my roommate informed me that he plans to keep the cat which is the main issue for me right now (the direct quote was "the cat has really taken to me as his master and I have every intention of keeping him" ). Plus, he kicked out my super awesome roommate because he thought her dog took away too much attention from the cat. And he kicked her out with one days notice which freaks me right out. AND he thinks it's totally appropriate to leave porn EVERYWHERE. There's two drawers of porn in our bathroom as well as a stack of it in the livingroom. Even when my little sister and her friend came to visit. And he's in his late 20s and is dating a 16 year old. But I'm paying $500 a month to have my own huge room downtown, so I don't really want to leave...but ick. I hate going home because of him.

Edited to add- And even though I would love to live in Burnaby, it's really hard to not be within walking distance to my school, because there are a lot of days where I'm expected to be there until 3:30 am, and I don't drive. And when I did live farther away, I paid more for cabs in a month than my rent.

OK, let me just say one thing: That's pretty fucked up right there. Dude has issues. Out of curiosity, did you actually know this weirdo before moving in, or was it one of those things where he had an ad looking for a roommate?

OK, so where's your school, and what's your definition of walking distance? For some people "walking distance" is 5 blocks, for others it's 5 miles... It makes a bit of a difference ;)

Nope, found the apartment on craigslist. It's the third place I've lived in Vancouver, found all 3 on craigslist, all 3 have been with creepy people :(. my school is at homer and hastings, so I want to find something in the downtown area.

dude you should jet from there, PSYCHO alert! and well CL is like flipping a coin. You do find jewels but like anything in life, you are bound to find your fair share of jerks.
Maybe you can go down to this place on robson st. it's a japanese store I can't remember exactly where to find it (around Jervis) but it is on the south side of Robson and it has a Pocky sign outside, if you go upstairs you will find a billboard with ads from people wanting to share a place. There, and also on Burrard st. right besides the Dennis restaurant on the east side of the street there is an ESL placement company for japanese students, same thing, go upsairs and you'll find some ads that more than likely come from people less psychotic than your current roomate. Why am I recommending these 2 places? I know people who've had great luck finding awesome clean responsible roomates from there.

The only thing is you might have lucked out with your current scenario because you say you pay $500 and have a huge room downtown, and you will have to compromise. I am not sure that's gonna be easy to find right now, the rental market is absolute crap at the moment.

good luck

Damn, that's shitty luck! If I were you I'd be looking in the Mt Pleasant area because it's a lot cheaper, so if you get a place with a roommate you'll probably be spending less than you are now, and it may even be possible to find a bachelor's suite for about what you're paying now. It may be farther than you want to walk though - I'd estimate about a 25min walk, but that depends on if you're a fast walker. Also, if you're walking home at 3AM, you'd be skirting around the downtown east side. That doesn't bother me personally (I've walked through there in the middle of the night plenty of times), but you might feel differently...

Anyone who doesn't understand that no human is a cat's "master" but is actually just the "feed me/clean my litter box/adore me" personal servant of the cat hasn't got a clue when it comes to felines. :)

Lateral thinking

Sorry to hear of your travails Tralalalala. One thing a friend of mine did a while back was rent office space. Most of the time he's out of the country but he basically has something to fall back on while in town. He got lucky and found a really small place for less than $200 per mo.

I was looking recently and was able to find places $380-$400 (generally in the 225-280 sq ft range). Generally, the closer you are to the DTE the cheaper it gets. I just did a walkabout downtown and jotted down the agents numbers.

While they aren't great for living in at least you can store your stuff and have a place to crash whilst finding a more permanent location. This won't work if you have pets obviously.
