I don't count the winnipeg sun to be a credible newspaper, more of a tabloid... But this was also on the CBC news cast last night.

On Charles ave, there's a couple (look like they're straight out of the trailor) who watch for cars (johns) and if they see those cars approach girls, they'll put your license plate on a Facebook page, or on YouTube.

So just putting that out there...

I run a business on a side and sometimes in certain areas I drive around in circles looking for places. If they see me doing this and suspect I'm a "John" and post me on Facebook, I'll sue their asses off. They will have to be careful. LOL....If they post the wrong person doing this than they might find themselves on Judge Judy.

I don't think this guy thought this through. He has his name, picture in the Sun. He better hope a pimp doesn't find him and retaliate.

These idiots are just looking for a freakin' lawsuit.
While I applaud their efforts to clean up their street they're playing with fire.
I got pulled over by the cops years ago on Ellice for cruising around the block a couple of times looking for McGee Street. I had a friend whose Mom lived on McGee, just off Ellice and he asked me to drop something off for him. I wasn't sure where to turn or if it was a right or left turn so I ended up going up and down Ellice and a couple of intersecting streets a few times. Next thing I know an unmarked car is pulling me over. Asked what I was up to. Told the cops my story and after a few minutes I was on my way. They even pointed me in the correct direction. No harm no foul but I can't imagine ending up with my license plate on Face Book just because I was lost or not sure where I was going.

I thought due to the Privacy Act, you couldn't do shit like that...
Not that I care, mind you. I don't pick up street girls...

Privacy Act does not extend to individuals. It only applies to corporations and how they deal with your personal data.
As well driving your car down a public street you have no expectation of privacy.
Now its what they do with the pics that would get them in trouble.

Post a pic of me in a public space and you have a court challenge on your hands. I appreciate the intent of the folks on Charles St. But they need to understand the law in our fair country to make a difference.

Pretty sure if someone takes a picture of you on public property, and isn't using it to make money, you have no rights.
As long as they don't accuse, you may find a lawsuit tough on that one.

Clive is right.
The Supreme Court has ruled on this type of thing before. As long as you're in a public space and performing what they call normal or reasonable activities such as walking on a public sidewalk, driving on a public street, standing on a corner waiting to cross you have no right or expectation of privacy. As long as the photographer is not going to use your image for commercial purposes they do not need you to sign a release.
Another exception is the use of your image in crowd scene. Even then, if it is for commercial purposes the photographer does not need your approval. The Supreme Court has ruled it is unreasonable to expect the photographer to seek out every individual in the crowd and have them sign a release.

Cheers

All good point, but this guy is saying the license plates he is taking pictures of are people trying to pick sp's. Maybe not so, many they are simple getting direct. Maybe the person on the street is a friend. He is making a statement without any proof.

I would say there would be a case for slander??????????????? Hey but I am not a lawyer.

I seen a comedian on TV talking about a city in Canada or the US that targets drug pushers by posting signs on their property stating they are "convicted drug dealers". The comedian said it's great for her because now she knows where to get her drugs. This is the same principal as these people trying to stop prostitution in their area. I personally never knew Charles Ave had prostitutes. I bet the prostitutes are happy with their free advertising.

The last time that I can remember someone or a group of people doing this aggressively, was Rev. Harry Lehotsky (I believe that was his name?), where they'd post pictures and I believe video of johns or suspected johns. I did at one point cruise the Ellice area from time to time, and checked their website to see if my licence plate came up on their website. A variant of it did--they'd got one number wrong on my licence plate, but still, they have no real legitimate case as to whether someone is looking for an address that they've never been to (ie: pizza guy, etc). "Suspected" johns are pointless to put up there.

Lehotsky lost a battle with cancer, but there was a noticeable decline in the activities of postings on the website that he helmed. All it takes is a couple or a few really disgruntled people (pimps, etc) and I bet there would be threats to one's well being. If you're in one of those neighborhoods, yeah it sucks that your children have to live in that area, but in the areas that are prone to hookers and streetwalkers, no one's kidding themselves about what they're getting into when they move into or decide to stay in that area to live.
