an old pick up place in downtown Edmonton called "The Coffeecup Inn" I've been told about the place from a 'special friend' who use to go here for his 'ladies'.

Anyone here old enough to remember the place ?? and if Sooooo - tell us (if you are so brave) a story.

I remember

Used to be the only coffee house were you could get a coffee and a free show. I am old enough to remember, but too young to get involved in any stories surrounding the pjace. Probably a good thing too!

I remember the #5 bus driving past the pink building with curved walls like a coffee cup on the NW corner of Jasper Ave and 97 Street. Across the street to the east was the WW Arcade now the home of the Hardware Grill. Across to the south where the Shaw Conference Centre is located was the Dreamland theater.

Well that's enough for me.

NURSE time for my spongebath.

I remember it well, it looked like a coffee cup. It was a hangout for street people. The SW would go in to get a warm up before going back to work. At that time I was in my 20s and would pickup the ladies for the cost of a coffee and a warm hotel room. They were so happy to get away from the cold they kept me warm all night.

Coffee Cup Inn

Yes the Coffee Cup was on the corner of 97 St & Jasper Ave. It was a small round building (shaped like a coffee cup!). It's clientele was the rough 97 St inhabitants (mostly homeless) and it stayed open past midnight. Police were often called to handle fights, robberies etc. One time before it closed the Paratroop unit (now disbanded)from Griesbach Barracks swooped down on the place and trashed it. It was a colorful part of Edmonton's history, torn down to make was for Canada Place.

Was that in the Alberta Hotel? Because I've read in the news that the hotel is going to be rebuilt sometime soon in that little park beside Canada Place.

The Alberta Hotel was on the same block but on the west end of it whereas the Coffee Cup Inn was on the east side.

I do have a story from Edmonton that goes back many many years..... 80s.

I was in Edmonton and drove by a cafe called "The American" late at night.

There was a very attractive blond standing out front and she waved.

I pulled over and she jumped in. 100/1hr she said.
There was not much light, but I said OK let's go back to my hotel.

I went up to my room first and she followed a few minutes behind.

I settled up with her and the she started to take off her heavy coat, her scarf, and the more she took off the more it became obvious how young she was.

Now I am scared. How old are you? She says she is 21.

I called BS. You do not even look 16.

I said honey, you keep the money, put your coat back on, here is 15 bucks for a cab.....

Ahhhh the Coffee Cup Inn.

My first and second pooning experiences. I was in grade ten and our sociology teacher made a point of saying “stay away from that place because cause all you were going to get is a good dose of the clap”. That was a good enough recommendation for me so into the city I came to see what all the fuss was about. The first lady I met gave me a quickie and told me that I was pretty good for a kid. Puffed out my chest a bit. The next weekend I went back and met a lady who suggested we take care of the financial details there and meet back at her place. So I had my first pooning experience, and my first life lesson about paying up front and saying I will meet you. I hung around the meeting place for awhile before I finally accepted that I have been ripped off. :) As I recall the rate was about $20.00, but to put it in perspective I think I was earning $1.00 an hour from my part time job. Fun memories of being a naive kid.
