I've been writing since I was eleven.. Poetry, Song Lyrics, Short Stories.. I used to write ALOT.. It was my main outlet for all life's stresses and such..
But for some reason, lately, I have had the worst case of writer's block..
I was wondering how any of you writers out there, deal with your writer's block? Where do you get your inspiration from?

For me, I find that I don't write when my life is too busy or crazy in some way or other. I seem to have a doing things mode OR a writing mode.

I find I have to intentionally chill things a bit to switch gears. I'll go for a sauna or a therapuetic massage and go for a long walk. It takes me most of the day to get chilled out enough to want to write.

Yeah, life's been super stressful lately.. and it's a bit of a catch 22, because I need to write to calm down.. but I have to be calm to write.. lol.. It's awful.. I really need to be able to write.. I have so many ideas in my head.. so many things going on that I want to convey with poetry and such.. but I can't stop my mind from spinning for even just one moment, so that I can quickly grab an idea, and hold onto it.

Try my way. You've got to chill out to write, so force yourself to chill.

Book a day off.

Turn off your phone.

Get a massage.

Gor for a long walk.

Go home.

I know its easier said than done, but I find it puts me back on track.

Just sit down and write. Stream of consciousness. Don't judge what you're writing, and don't aim for any particular goal. If you want to be a writer, you have to write. Once you've built up some momentum, then you can begin to channel or focus your writing toward whatever goal you want to achieve.

For an instant excerise what I do is just write. As fast as I can the first words that come into my head. Fifteen minutes of just writing words, one per line (free free to make several columns if you need to) the key is don't stop. Soon the words stop being random, your brain starts to impose a structure, but don't stop. If you need to write sentences to keep the ink flowing then write sentences. I find doing that and taking a break and doing something very different (sports, interactions with other people, etc) helps a lot.

You just missed it
When I get writer's block I just walk away and do other things in life... Now that can be 15 minutes or it can be a year. I wrote the first 12 pages once and then stopped cold... Didn't even attempt to continue or write something else for a very long time, something like a year. Then, bang, 2 weeks later I had finished the 100+ pages.

Thought sometimes if I go off to another writing project and at least start a few, the ideas come back to me and I am able to return to the previous one.

And as some people have suggested, just taking a day off from writing can do the mind good. Go out and enjoy a park, get a massage, pamper yourself, window shop, walking, swimming, lots of sex :) You get the picture, things to get your mind off of what you are working on.

It's like in the movie "Pi", the main character tells a story about how someone was given a task by the king to figure out if a statue was made of gold... The person could not figure it out because the statue was so perfect looking but he could not tell for sure. In frustration his wife told him to take a bath... When he stepped into the bath he noticed that the water rose in the bath tub as he laid down. Water displacement... So, from there he figured out how to tell real gold from fake golf, water displacement. So, sometimes when you are stuck on something, "take a bath"... Literally and/or figuratively...

BB.,

What I do when I get Writer's Block? I enter writing contests... They all have premises... Or themes & then I find that have NEW ideas... flowing... Currently I am considering 5 local writing contests... Always fun & I won a local writing contest ONCE... 2000$ worth of camping gear :)` PM if you would like details of the current writing contests... (local) carlotta

I find isolation a great tool to get my creative juices flowing. Poetry is emotion based, and for me the best way to get at the emotions is to take a break from the outside world. When you are left alone with nothing but your own thoughts, emotion is almost guaranteed to come out. You can sit and knock your head against the wall and try and force the words out with your brain, or sit back and let the words flow from your heart effortlessly.

Hey Belle
A couple of days break doing something completely different usually works for me when I get "the block". If that fails, a long run, a hot tub, and a cuba libre. :D

Another recommended writer's block remedy is to start writing...anything.

Write about your frustration about lack of inspiration, or your grocery list, or what you see out the window.

Write about all the thoughts flooding your head and at least help get those out of the way.

The theory is that the act of putting down something clears the mind and gets the ball rolling. When you are back in the mood, start a new doc and dive on in.

Good luck.

P.S. I don't recommend pages of "All work and no play make Jack a dull boy" or whatever Nicholson wrote reams of in The Shining... ;)

I write ten pages every day.

Sometimes I'm done in a few hours... sometimes longer... but I don't stop 'till I hit ten. If I'm in a zone I'll keep banging away... if not I stop and do something else.

If I get up and turn on the TV I'm already dead.
