I have a friend who is about to leave on a 3 year backpacking trip where she will not be staying in any country for very long. She has been unable to find a health insurance provider. Every provider has told her that as a Canadian they will only cover her if she also has provincial insurance. Usually you can write your province and tell them that you are going to be gone for however long and keep your provincial coverage. However she is going to be gone too long and they will not cover her. Of special concern is her last 6 months will be in Australia on a working holiday visa and the visa requires health insurance be already in place...She knows she could lie and say she was only going to be gone 2 years and get provincial coverage for the first part of the trip but then the last year is not covered and she can not get that working visa.
She is freaking out. I told her I would post here as it's the only really big forum I know about and maybe someone here would have some information...?
There must be a company that will let you pay extra if you do not have provincial coverage. I mean, Americans do not have the same kind of coverage we have and yet companies cover them for enough money. She has called every company she can and they all say this is impossible for a Canadian.
Like I said, she is freaking out so if you can help me calm her down please do!
