The simplest advice I can give is to sew a few Canadian Flags on your jeans or what ever.. Our Country and history go a long way in Europe. Opens doors that you didn't even know were closed.
Pick your route and goals and be as flexible as possible.

I might be doing the same thing this September for 4 or 5 weeks

I'm thinking about doing couchsurfing instead of hostels though

If you are really traveling light I wouldn't bother with an laptop, even a light weight one will weigh a 2-3 lbs. I'm planning on an ipod touch with the apple camera connect kit for the ipad.

Thanks for the heads up on Gypsies and cheese, Em. I also like the idea of using my credit card as an ATM so I will definitely be doing that.

Rintin and hmm, I have Istanbul and Prague in my list. I heard there's an overabundance of beautiful people in Prague :)

Optomyst, I'm glad to know you had good experience having a Canadian marker in your clothing. I oftentimes find the Canadian flag a good conversation starter when traveling.

Geek, I have a netbook (3 lbs with and 8 hr LI battery) that I will be bringing together with my Iphone. I know it's added weight but I use my netbook to access my VOIP accounts (MJ and freephoneline) a lot when I travel.

I saw this on a tv show once. Make sure you wear a canadian flag pin or something that shows you're canadian. If they think you're american they will be rude to you. lol

A few thoughts that you can take or leave:

1. I wouldn't bother with the Canadian flag. These days, Canadians are often more likely to be mocked for doing this than be treated better. And one of the first questions that anyone will ask you when you're talking to them is where you're from, so they'll find out your Canadian soon enough anyway. Just my opinion.

2. Definitely check out both easyjet and ryanair, as they often have flights that are cheaper than the cost of a comparable train ride, and if you're pressed for time and trying to cover a bunch of ground, flying will obviously help you out. For example, if you're flying into London and will be going to Istanbul (I think you said you're interested in going there), consider flying into London and then flying directly to Istanbul. Then meander your way back.

3. Don't have a set itinerary. I've found that the best places I've been to have less to do with the place and more to do with the people I meet. So you don't want to meet a bunch of cool people and then have to take off the next day. Better to be flexible.

4. Have fun and don't sweat the small stuff. Usually when things go a little bit wrong (miss a train; can't get a room for a night and have to sleep in a park), it makes for the best stories.

Thanks Cadman for the advice on traveling light. I'm leaving towards the end of summer so will definitely follow your advice.

Silenceisgolden, I like your approach to traveling. There is wisdom in what you said about being flexible and not sweating out the small stuff. I will have to resist the temptation to over analyze things and allow for some spontaneity.
