Racism is alive and well in Canada 🇨🇦. You'd be amazed how often I get called chug, wagon burner etc. Even at work, some gutless coward scribbled chug on my tool box. All demographics are racist, young, old, male, female, rich and poor.
I can't believe shit like this still goes on. How sad. Every time I think society is moving forward I realize we've actually taken a couple of steps backward. Sorry you have to put up with crap like this.

I don't get the "Anti Asian Racism". Sounds like a double negative to me.
So:
Anti Asian- against Asian
Asian Racism- against Asian
Again the press is inventing new way to confuse people. Is there a reason for it?

There is a black community in Halifax.

As some metioned on a worksite, yes racial slurs are slung, mostly in good humour. Most don't take offense, because to take offense means it affects you, therefore you need more name calling... Its called developing a thick skin. Name calling the simpliest form, to get people to react.... For these people you give it back... Is it racism, or simple banter?

I was just going to say the exact same thing. Actually, this never happened to me in Toronto, but many times in Vancouver. I think Vancouver is very elitist and snobbish. Seems like inferiority complex of California wanna be type. Very hard to make friends here. The superficiality manifests itself here with the mentioned racism and attitudes toward a different accent. I've been told to go back where I came from as well. When I express my opinions about current local affairs, I've been told to shut up and get the fuck out of here. I constantly experience locals born here easily start conversations with other locals born in Canada but they seem to have no patience for me. Sort of like, they assume we don't have much in common. I've been even told a few times that me, as an immigrant, will always be a second class citizen in their view, and they will never think of me as a true Canadian. I'm white by the way, and those whom I'm talking about were also white. So, discrimination, in many forms, is very much alive here and doing well.
I stopped making friends a long time ago, when ppl said " let's get together I call you" that never happened, I had to get used to it they are just saying it.
I grew up in a country when you said something to somebody you made that happen. If you couldn't do it, you let them know I can't make it.
Maybe I'm just a very responsible person and that's how I treat everybody.
Interestingly 2 of my clients are my best friends, but yes it's hard to make friendship with girls. I gave up.

Off topic but I can say that kind of superficiality via though away statements is everywhere. I've lived in several countries and visited numerous others. It is rare to make a "real" friend. "Let's do lunch" is such big cliche that it's laughable.....If you have a "real" friend then treasure them.

Sorry if the name of the topic has caused confusion; I take your point. The media, here and almost everywhere, has been focussed a lot on racism and lately specific types of racism such as racism directed against asians. My perception was that prior to C19 asians didn't get as much racial abuse as other people so I was curious how asian and non-asian members of our community felt about racism directed at asians in Vancouver.

My wife, and another woman whom I worked with decades ago, are my best friends. They both drive me crazy from time to time, but I treasure them nonetheless.

My other close friends are pretty much all people I met through work. So it seems pretty normal to me that two of your clients are your best friends.

So let me get this straight .... if you're threatened by a mentally-disturbed person because you're Asian, it doesn't really count?

Kind of like if you're killed by a mentally-disturbed gunman, you're not really dead.

Got it.
Don't be idiotic. If anyone is threatened by a mentally-disturbed person, it means it's illogical and irrational, and not necessarily racist.

So if you're killed by a “mentally disturbed” person, it's illogical and irrational, so it's not murder? Just trying to follow your reasoning here...

And just for the record, just because someone is mentally ill doesn’t mean they’re illogical.

Some of your non-sequiters are truly impressive.

I have no idea what you’re referring to because I never watched the movie. So it’s all rather cryptic to me what you’re trying to convey. Kind of like your entire contribution to this thread....

And instead of responding to what I’ve posted, I assume your Forest Gump comment is an attempt at insulting me.

When there is no position to defend, resort to insults. Ad Hominem attacks are the lowest form of discourse. It’s what folks desperate to save face resort to when their king is alone in a corner facing a Queen, a rook, and a bishop.

in 2020 the Vancouver Police department reported a 717% increase in anti-Asian harassment and violence. Those are the numbers. Just because you have not personally witnessed it, does not mean it does not happen. They also reported that harassment and violence towards other minorities went down, so it looks like it’s the same group of assholes just directing their anger at someone else. Mostly the elderly, because it is easier to target someone who cannot fight back.

Glad to see this thread filling with visceral emotion. Yep, this has been started about anti Asian racism, but obviously it runs ways deeper. Hope this want get neutered, as it's all relevant and related. I don't think any side remarks are intended as a diversion from the topic.

It's because it's hard to believe you're that obtuse, or are you just trying to troll.

I never said if someone who was mentally ill attacked someone else it never happened, it means the aggressor might not have the capacity to realize what they're doing, or why. So if a drug-addled, mentally disturbed individual attacks an elderly Asian man, it might not be racially-motivated.

Why do you think people are found legally not guilty, or don't face trial at all by reason of insanity? Doesn't mean they didn't hurt or kill someone, but by law, they are found to have diminished responsibility. And how do you think that determination is made, if not by assessing behaviour, including logic? Or do you think street people with drug and mental health issues are where they are because of their logical decisions?

It would be helpful to know the actual numbers, and is that 717% increase over one year, or five or ten years? And how much was harrassment, and how much was violence. And what constitutes harrassment?

Suppose there was 1 case one year, and 7 cases the next. Is saying there were "7 incidents" as dramatic as saying there "was a 700% increase"? Obviously there are incidents happeneing, but don't discount the sensationalism when media decides to make an issue their cause.

Hate crimes incidents increased 97% from 142 incidents in 2019 to 280 in 2020.
Anti-Asian hate crime incidents rose by 717% from 2019 (12) to 2020 (98)

That's a fuck ton more in a theoretically mutli-cultural and soft city.
Can you imagine what it must be like in less "accepting" cities?
