Yup, that's what our sad-sacked Nucks are doing, suppose it's better than nothing ;) B/c our scouting department sucks the big one, and why on earth is that idiot Delorme still the Chief Scout, is another reason why our franchise is jeered, laughed at, every year.

and even when the BW defend our great drafting record, that just makes it worse.

http://www.theprovince.com/Sports/Under+radar+signing+real/1694586/story.html

So that's what it comes down to. We're signing undrafted players. That's super intelligent, and what's the point of having a so-called professional scouting department?

These gems are going to be about 3 or 4 years away in just making the team; when will we see impact?

good post BJHunter...

I'm sure he'll be the next Scott Niedermayer:rolleyes: ...

remember when they signed Bernier last summer and he immediately became a projected 30-35 goal scorer...

BTW, Gillis is a fat face...

There's nothing wrong with the signing itself. Nobody is expecting much to come of it, including Gillis. If he turns into a gem, great. If not, nothing lost. Why not roll the dice and see what happens?

The article you posted is the real problem. Another local journalist praising an unproven organizational depth type signing and proclaiming the player in question as a future star. Vancouver sports media types are a frigging joke, and always have been... that's one thing BJH and I agree on!

While the reporter is a knob. I certainly have no problem signing the kid to a contract. He was ranked 135 by central scouting (Mid 5th round). Why not take him, and not waste a draft pick? Its not like Gillis is making a big deal how he will be on the team next year. If he turns out good then great, if he doesn't no great loss.

Neil Macrae? The parallels are astounding! (not a knock, I personally like that Neil isn't a blind faith follower (a la the entire Sportsnet Pacific crew), nor a total west coast ass hat making our market look like a total shitshow (a la Tony Gallagher))

As for the story, it's certainly not news worthy. If the kid pans out and helps the Moose, great. If he eventually makes the NHL, awesome. Otherwise, it's a no name signing who'll get a no name assignment with little to no expectations to be anything more than a permanent farm hand (a modern day Nolan Baumgartner).

the author of the article, Jason Botchford is a dolt:cool: ...

as are 95% of the scribes in The Province...

the funny thing is he has been described as a gem:rolleyes: ...

That's for sure! I mean, if those delirious CH fans think that this team is SO GREAT, that they SHOULD'VE won the Cup, judging by the bandwagonese during the playoffs, one would've thought that our scouting/drafting was as good as Detroits!

Other than the Sedins, which were no-brainers (then again, that's not easy for Delorme et al, lol, again, they probably fluked out), what 'gem' did we steal in the draft?

Not Kesler. He was drafted high, & not a superstar yet. if ever. well, whatever, by canuck standards, he's a really good pick.

Everyone else is via free agency/trades.

So who's that dude who thought we've got a great farm system? he's been saying that for 2 yrs, yet, whoever these Grabners/Schneiders, etc. are, they still havne't made any impact at all. If you count Schneider's crappy short-term outing last yr when Loungo was out.

And other teams are finding gems and REALLY sticking to the team, making contributions.

so I rest my case...again...it feels so good to put the CH's in their place.

p.s. Oh, I forgot another Canuck draft pick in the lineup; Mattias Ohlund. Wow. I'm sure he's made an impact on the Nucks' success over the years. But again, drafted high so wouldn't call him a gem either.

wouldn't put it by the Canucks...

on an even more bizarre note, two CFL teams have drafted dead players in the past:eek: ...

http://74.125.155.132/search?q=cach...drafts+a+dead+player&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=ca
Frist off the Calgary flames drafted a kid who past away 2 months previously before the NHL draft. So don't just single out the CFL It has happened in all the major leagues NFL, NBA, MLB.

Okay so that done Evan Oberg will be a fantastic "prospect" for the canucks. Thats all any of these kids are "prospects", even the kids who get drafted in 2 weeks.. they are all prospects some will have a greater impact than others. this Oberg kid looks pretty good, he's a lifelong fan of the canucks too, being part of the organization will spark him up a bit as well.

As far as I'm concerned. We lost Bourdon a puck moving D man in a tragic accident. We have a depth hole in our organization that needed to be filled. Sure he maybe a year or two off in his development. But we saw how quickly Edler stepped into the line up and developed on the fly. Perhaps Oberg could just be a lump of coal waiting to be pressed into a rough diamond.. or maybe he stays a lump of coal who know who cares. He was a depth siging, if he anchors our defence for the next 10 years that would be super, if he just toils away in the minors so be it, we need AHL players to ya know for organizational depth It's not all just about the Canucks.

We didn't overpay and we might have gotten something.. you never know.

I don't understand why this signing is causing so much fuss among some of you. We all know how shallow our depth is, at least they're trying to bring in guys to help with that.

There isn't anyone that's available out there that's gonna come in and be an known immediate impact. they're using and I'm just glad we're not blindly throwing money like the rangers

I agree. This signing doesn't impact the cap, may turn out to be something good, may not. Take away the fillers and the article stated that several teams tried to sign this player and he chose the Canucks. Nowhere does it state that they have signed the next big thing, so why is this such an issue and why was this thread even started? Anything for the troll to stir up shit I guess

I thought it was an excellent example of what BJHunter speaks of...

the hyperbole in the article is enough to make you vomit...

first the headline, Canucks sign real gem:rolleyes: ...

how the f**k do the Canucks, The Province or anybody else know he is a gem at this point...

typical homer media propaganda...

and if he is such a gem, why the f**k hasn't he been drafted...

already he is being compared to Duncan Keith:rolleyes: ...

was Duncan Keith drafted...

most of the quotes regarding said players abilities and how coveted he was by so many teams, ( again why the f**k wasn't he drafted), come from fat face Gillis' mouth:rolleyes: ...

of course he's going to talk this guy up and try to convince all the sheep in Vancouver of his brilliance as a GM:rolleyes: ...

pathetic homer media propaganda...

and bombast...

nothing more...

the fact that you have bought into it is sad...

He wasn't drafted because he opted out of the draft to attend university. Without having someone speak for you, you really show just how little you actually know about hockey and how much you are really just trying to be a troll ;)

is this the best you can do you little Canuck sphincter-lic;) ...

go back and read the article...

he was ranked 135 by Central Scouting...

mid-fifth round...

he went undrafted...

nobody was interested in waiting four years for a fifth round talent...

nice take on things though...

he opted out:rolleyes: ...

I guess you and Hubba have opted out of this year's draft:rolleyes: ...

I'm sure the Canucks would have a spot in their PR department for you...

notice by the way, now that the Canucks have signed him he is late first round material...

I guess he's a late bloomer:rolleyes: ...

same thing with Bernier, averaged 12-14 goals per year, but as soon as the Canucks signed him he was pencilled in for 30-35 goals:rolleyes: ...

the beat goes on...

enjoy the awards banquet on Thursday...

I'm sure you think Kesler is a shoe-in for the Selke award...

if he does, maybe we can have a parade...

come on Trackstar, let's keep it real...
