Baught a camera for a friends bday and had this pushy salesperson try to sell me on extended warranty. Kept on telling her the 2 yr warranty was good enough. Try to convince me to buy 30.00 extra warranty for a 100.00 camera lol. I finally snapped at her saying look i just want the dam camera ok.

I think they also are required to sell a certain number of extended warranties or else they are considered not to be doing a proper "job".

I usually just say "Well, when this dies in 2 years, I'll be buying a new one"...considering some of the warranties ended up being 30%-50% of the actual price of the item, they usually aren't worth it.

On top of that, have you ever tried bringing in a busted item and dealing with the customer service?

Having said that, an ex of mine had a warranty on her laptop and it got replaced twice with newer models as well as the warranty being extended to cover the newer computers. Took a lot of haggling and annoying them constantly, but it can be useful on some items.

haha that's what i thought also. Im not going to pay 30.00 warranty on a cheap 100.00 camera. Told her if it's busted my friend can throw it in the trash or i'll buy her a new one.

Lol I had the same pushy salesperson at The Source. On a freaking car charger for my cell.
I had to say no 4 times!

Who in the world buys an extended warranty on a cell charger? Lol

uh...Edmonton.
I recall a time in Calgary....I walked in to buy a fax machine....found the one I was looking for....and bought it. The salesperson actually followed me out the door as I had declined the "extra coverage". He's all kinda red in the face and uber pushy. I paused long enough to say....."no, not interested". He says...."but, if it breaks blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah...."

My reply is simple...."this is an expense item, not a capital purchase. If it breaks, I will throw it away and get a new one" That sent him off into a frenzy.....that was a life lesson on where the big box retailers make money on electronics. I have not failed to eschew the "extended" warranty since. I don't give a fiddler's fuck if the salesperson likes me or not....I just want my fax machine.

cheers,

eddie.

extended warranty programs are very high margin items so there is often a policy to push them

in certain cases I am sure commissions are involved

in any case, why would you buy a camera anywhere else but london drugs, they actually know cameras and support their products with great service and a great, no questions asked, no hassle warranty, don't know about how they are with extended warranty but the company is definitely customer service all the way

probably the advantages of being a local and smaller chain

Extended warranties are not a bad idea but in this case, I'd only buy it if it was $15.00 to $18.00 bux

She even tried to give me a discount on the extended warranty something like 4.00 off the 30.00. Was trying not to laugh cause she was being so pushy. Then she goes we just want our customers happy lol.

ya no kidding! If you are going to need the extended warranty, the item will be so out of date by the time it's needed, the item is going to be completely obsolete!

A friend mentioned for some big ticket items to ask for it only if they will reduce the purchase price by the amount of the extended warranty, so in essence you pay the same but have the coverage. Depending on the salesperson they may make it work.
I've had this done on my big screen TV. I was more than happy to let him do it as he was a great guy and extremely helpfull. I got a hell of a deal so what do I care if the guy makes more money doing it that way? Love my Plasma;)

There's not much at these places which id be extended warranties on. Baught a laptop which has a manufactures warranty on the parts and had a friend who fixes computers. They wanted 200-300 on the extended warranty. I thought at that time in 2 yrs id be tired of the laptop and get something newer anyways. My hp laptop did break down and hp sent me these boxes which i sent them free and got a new laptop fixed. The 200-300 would have be a complete waste of money.

the item is going to be completely obsolete!

I myself loathe pushy salespeople in general...from the annoying "can I help you" which is salestalkese for "hello O boost to my paychecks/I really could not give a fuck about you after you leave the store".....even worse are the ones who try to upsell you accessories...I remember when I bought my first computer and the salesman kept trying to upsell me this package of stuff and the main point was that it had a power bar with a surge protector...his mantra was "you need this" over and over again...my reply that ended it was "I have a fuckin power bar at home and when I get this home and if I discover that the box does not contain EVERYTHING to get it up and running I am going to bring it right back here and shove it up your ass"...even more annoying is going into a gas station at say 7AM to buy a cup of tea/coffee and getting to the counter with everything you want (one of the main objectives of purchasing anywhere is to arrive at the till with everything you wish to purchase) only to have some brainwashed wage-slave try to upsell you into buying 2 chocolate bars to get an extra airmile.....my reply to this is "if I wanted the fuckin chocolate bars they would be in front of me on the counter"

End of rant

I always politely listen to the first iteration of the script. They have to give it to you or they get in trouble. I then tell them I never get the extended warranty. When they ask why I tell them I don't need a reason. If they try again, I politely tell them that if they continue I will leave without buying the product. One actually still tried to continue once and I said goodbye and left.

It just goes to show how shady some of these sales staff are. I used to be a sales manager at Best Buy/Future Shop and the practice mentioned above is call inboarding and is a fireable offense. Many times a legitimate deal will be made if the customer is purchasing the service plan, along with accessories such as cables, etc, as this is where all the profit is, so it makes more sense to make a deal as opposed to letting the customer walk. However, if the sales person actually discounts the item by the price of the service plan, that is against the rules and done strictly for their own gain. But as a customer, I probably wouldn't turn it down.

He did and was honest about it, I was all for it because I had a ton of questions and he spent a lot of time with me. My kinda sales guy!

Only time I will buy from Futureshop is when the deal is too good to pass up. I only buy from them 'online' and don't have to listen to their upselling bullshit. Order it and select pick up or have it delivered is the way to go. For my $$ London Drugs is a better way to go and if you say no to their extended warranty, they don't get all Butt Hurt and react.

as mentioned earlier, these extended warranties are highly commissionable for the clerk, probably in the 30-50% range....so that's the motivation for selling you something that you don't need.....for all you old timers, do you remember when stereos and Tv's all had 5 year warranties?...and lasted for 20+ years?

From what I understand they get a huge bonus/commission for selling extended warranties. A friend mentioned for some big ticket items to ask for it only if they will reduce the purchase price by the amount of the extended warranty, so in essence you pay the same but have the coverage. Depending on the salesperson they may make it work.
Now that is smart!
