As a grown ass fan of cartoons, I have tried to see what the allure is ,but I just can't get into it. What is it that makes the genre so frickin popular?

It's popular because there are so many different types of it. Problem here in North Amercia is that people only think there's Dragonball Z and Hentai. Anime isn't just for kids. Anime became a popular method to make televison and movies in Japan because the Americans bombed Japan back to the stone age in WWII, so the movie industry was decimated. A cheap way to make films without sets or high paid actors was to make anime.

I watch it regularly because there's so much variety.

One that I recommend a lot to people is Cells at Work! It's about how the human body works. The main character is a plucky red blood cell in the form of a young woman who carries oxygen to different parts of the body.

One of the saddest movies you will will watch is A Silent Voice. It's about how a deaf girl was bullied in school.

I like the Ghibli movies too. The Wind also Rises is a fictionalized history about how the Mitsubishi Zero was created.

One Punch Man is funny.

For some unknown reason, I like anime that is based off of an alternate Victorian Era England. The most popular is Full Metal Alchemist.

Violet Evergarden is a recent one that's interesting too.

A classic is Cowboy Bebop. Music is excellent and good storyline about space cowboys.

If you're down to just try to get into anime, watch Princess Mononoke. Its got lots of adult themes for an animated film, amazing action and animation.

From there, check out Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, and Nausicaa.

As for shows: Trigun, Evangelion, Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, claymore, fullmetal alchemist brotherhood are all good ones. If you like action/sci fi/fantasy.

Also Patlabor: The Movie

And Paprika, Ghost in the Shell 2, and Perfect Blue. These are for adults

I had a Japanese exchange student stay with us for a short time. When she left she gave my son a book of anime by Ghibli ( reproductions not the originals unfortunately). He was three at the time but what I didn't know was that it set off a lifelong passion in anime. When he graduated university I offered a trip anywhere in the world as a reward and he wanted to go to Japan specifically to go to the Ghibli museum in Tokyo. While I never understood or particularly liked anime the museum was one of the most interesting ones I have ever been in.

Anime is a huge genre. Some is just kids stuff of course; other stuff is too adult for any kid to watch. Some is basically disguised advertising; other stuff's all deep and philosophical.

I'd rather sit in a room full of anime geeks than a room full of people who think Scarface was the greatest gangster movie, and try to model their behavior after Tony Montana.

Yeah, it's so unfair. Even Tom got to catch Jerry that one time.
