...and this is what we used to do to the best and brightest in our society

"...As we resist the impulse, remembering that there are other good reasons not to smoke, we might spare a thought for Giordano Bruno, the Dominican friar, philosopher, mathematician and astronomer whose concept of the infinite universe expanded on Copernicus’s model; he was the first European to understand the universe as a continuum where the stars we see at night are identical in nature to the Sun. Bruno’s views were considered dangerously heretical by the (Roman) Inquisition, which imprisoned him in 1592; after eight years of refusals to recant, on this date in 1600, he was burned at the stake..."

I found this on a cancer website dealing with the theory of atavistic tendencies in human cells, which, is also fascinating.

So, to change the direction of my own thread, the theory of atavism speculates that cancer cells are not rogue cells, just throwbacks.

Ancient organisms were eukaryotic cells surviving independently. Modern organisms are complex symbiotic relationships of specialized versions of these cells.

If the theory of atavism is correct then cancer is the result of a gene switching on and creating replications of early primitive, independent cells, which, are basically growing and replicating in our bodies in the same way they would have in their primitive atmosphere.

Well, that was my Mother's day conversation with my children.

An interesting theory. If it is correct, cancer could perhaps be considered an auto-immune disease gone wild. The symbiotic normal cells become parasitic cancerous cells and like many parasites, attack and eventually kill the host. Good thing they don't appear to have figured out a good vector for host to host transmission.

Laurel, Your children are very lucky indeed! Such a very smart Mom - and beautiful too!

Check this article out for fascination about cells, our bodies and real hope for the cancer cure. It is lengthy but a tribute to out of the box thinking (or good old fashioned clear thinking), perserverance and dedication right in your backyard - Portland OR:

I'm not sure if auto-immune would be the correct descriptor as it entails the body's immune system attacking parts of the body itself. Cancer is, at it's basic level, simply uncontrolled growth.

It shouldn't be a requirement that we fit all Cancer into a single model.
I wasn't requiring that at all; I was commenting on the the definition of the condition, not it's causal factors. Cancer is uncontrolled growth of abnormal tissue; an auto-immune reaction is the body's own immune system attacking itself. They're two different things.

There are a lot of theories out there, and, cancer sure is an interesting subject to study. There are theories on how diet factors in. I know people, and quite a few of them doctors, don't put a lot of store into the relationship between what we eat and our health, but, veterinarians take it quite seriously. An organisms diminished ability to utilize fuel is a factor in their ability to fight pathogens as well as maintain and rebuild their structures.

In other words, if what goes into your face is just coming out the other end without having been absorbed and distributed properly, then, the cells aren't receiving the nutrients they need to copy themselves correctly, and, a chain reaction begins that can be slow at first and then snowball.

Autoimmune disorders are interesting because the root of the problem can be miles away from the organ that ends up distressed. Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Grave's disease are both linked to digestive disorders. Every person I know with Graves also has diverticulitis, and, for Hashimoto's adding selenium to the diet can reduce antibodies very quickly.

However, I think too many jump to the conclusion that a change in diet can cause a miracle cure. If you are born with a broken link in the chain there isn't much you can do (positive eh?) I just like to think eating a healthful diet makes life a bit more comfortable. You wouldn't catch me eating mangosteens for breakfast!
