54-million-dollar win sets new Canadian lottery record
OTTAWA (AFP) - A very lucky person will collect the largest prize in Canadian lottery history this week worth a whopping 54.3 million dollars (46 million US dollars), officials said.
The winning ticket was purchased in the western province of Alberta, Western Canada Lottery Corporation officials said in a statement. The winning numbers were: 5, 11, 20, 30, 37 and 43.
The jackpot grew unexpectedly days before the draw as hundreds of thousands flocked to lottery counters to buy Lotto 6/49 tickets at a rate of 11,272 Canadian dollars per minute, after officials predicted a big jackpot.
Canada-wide, ticket sales were over 99 million Canadian dollars (85 million US dollars).
The previous jackpot record was a Lotto Super 7 prize worth almost 38 million Canadian dollars (32 million US dollars) shared by four separate winners in May, 2002.
