there were 6 hiding in the Canadien Embassy until Ken Taylor got them exit visa and became american hero (from wiki)That's it, stop hitting the bong before posting. There were no hostages in the Canadian Embassy in Iran. The Americans that got screwed up, were screwed because they went in without the proper equipment for the job at hand. The helicopters they went in with were not equipped to operate in a desert environment and the crews paid the price for that.
Canada already has a group of tough guys for the kinds of operations you envision, JTF 2 and they are very, very good. But the best laid plans of mice and men .etc.......... When the shit hits the fan and they need help, they need it fast. You can't be waiting to crank up a Spad and hope it makes it.
Al, you should be happy that the forces are in fact building ships that can play the role you are referring to, though only two at this time. They are however getting more heavy lift air capacity as well so we don't have to lease from the Russians.
My point was that the US will defend Canada not because they "like" us as friends (although that is nice) but because it makes vital strategic sense. How you can take that as "veiled dislike" or skepticism is beyond me.I don't share your skepticism and veiled dislike of the USA. Of course the USA doesn't want "crazy conquerors" next door. Of course the USA has an interest in our natural resources. I believe a natural friendship exists independent of the points that you raised. We have much in common with the USA, like we do with the UK who are also our friends.

Kenneth Douglas "Ken" Taylor, OC (born October 5, 1934 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada) was a Canadian ambassador to Iran. Taylor helped six Americans escape from Iran during the hostage crisis in 1979 by contacting Canadian Prime Minister Joe Clark and getting him to issue the Americans Canadian passports to fool the Iranians into believing they were Canadians in a covert operation called the Canadian caper.
Iranian students invaded the United States embassy on November 4, 1979 (Iran hostage crisis). During the riot six Americans managed to escape. They hid for four days before reaching the Canadian embassy where they met Taylor who devised the plan to get them out of Iran safely. The other 52 hostages were released on the last day of U.S. President Jimmy Carter's term in office, in January 1981.
To what extent do you spend to? 65 top of the line fighter jets. The USA will have 1300-2500 of the exact same jet.Can you with 100% certainty predict the political climate in the world 5 or 10 years from now? Who would have thought that in 2011, France would lead a coalition to attack a Muslim country? Who would have thought that a Canadian general would be in charge of the campaign while the USA took a back seat? Who would have anticipated that terrorists would fly planes into buildings which are located just over the Canadian border.
Canada has valuable land located in the Arctic which ownership is disputed by several countries. What will happen if those claims are escalated?
To answer your original question I have no idea which group or country will pose a threat to Canada in the future. I would rather be prepared by having a substantial military. You make the comment that there is a group of countries that we couldn't stop regardless of any increase in spending. What is your solution? Do we just throw up our hands and surrender?
You spend to what you think you need to effectively fill the role the equipment is being bought for. Among the buyers is Singapore, they are in for a 100 planes, and this a country that is just a bit bigger then the base my SO is currently at. Why do they need that many ? What role does the Canadian Government see for Canada in the world, that's where you spend to.To what extent do you spend to? 65 top of the line fighter jets. The USA will have 1300-2500 of the exact same jet.
Pretty much every western country will be getting these as well. Britain, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Israel, India and Brazil even.
And did you happen to miss this little gemDid you read what Hank wrote and did you properly read the article posted ?
So let me repeat, there were no hostages at the at the Canadian Embassy. No American troops were heading in to rescue anybody from the Canadian Embassy. The Iranians were holding Americans hostage at the American Embassy. The Americans that escaped from their embassy to the Canadian Embassy were free to leave the Embassy anytime they wanted to do so, they weren't being held hostage by anyone. The fact that they might not have survived had they left the Embassy does not make them hostages, except to circumstance.
There you go, former hostages. As for missing the gem, I was around for it, I knew some of the Americans that died in the desert, and Ken Taylor is a client. I think I probably had an insight into that situation, that you wouldn't get from just reading/watching news reports. And did you happen to miss this little gem

FACT, they were being held hostage and escaped, maybe former hostage would be a better choice of words?
Tell me the last time any party's election platform had anything to do with what they actually did when elected. All "platforms" are cynical bids to appeal to whatever they think is most likely to get them elected. Whatever they do afterwards doesn't have much correlation.Today the liberals ...... SR
To me, the most cynical campaigns are always the ones that are based in fear-mongering. All parties indulge in this, but the conservatives (in all Western countries, not just in Canada) rely on fear for their support. Fear of crime (must build more prisons), fear of terrorism, fear of immigrants, fear that our society will change, fear that the other guys will fuck everything up. In this case, fear of "the reckless coalition" seems to be the constant message.Hank, you have to admit that the Liberal's promises are a little more cynical than most. How many times has the Daycare promise been recycled since it was first offered in 1993? Then there is Health Care. I think it's kind of rich to have the only party that ever reduced the transfer payments to the Provinces promising to "protect" Health Care.
The reason the C$ is so high is because of the weakness of the US$ combined with extremely high demand for Cdn natural resources. It has nothing to do with what the Conservatives have done or not done.A few comments:
Ask yourself this: Do you want to go back to having a 60 cent dollar and higher taxes and higher prices for everything? If so, hey, vote liberal.
As far as Iggy's "everyone gets to go to university" BS, what do you expect from a university prof? So, we'll have more people with university degrees asking you "do you want fries with that?" because they certainly won't have other jobs, once he's raised the corp taxes and trashed the dollar.
If we can't believe what Ignatieff says because his background story isn't entirely accurate, and it's not even off by that much, then what does that say about the Conservatives, when their story is even further off base?I regularly check the "Reality Check" page at CBC's website. This is on there today. When Michael Ignatieff can't even tell the truth about his own background, his own family - - it's really hard to believe anything else he has to say that isn't independently collaborated by another source.
I believe he was referring to same article you quoted above, where the CPC's version of Ignatief's family origins seemed even farther from the truth than his own.Oh .... there is a video of Stephen Harper claiming that his family immigrated to Canada with nothing? Of course there isn't.
I don't understand. Was there a picture of this woman on that candidate's website? There is a controversy? Google news doesn't show anything about it....and -5% in any poll is way within the margin of error.Tip to the "Brain Trust" at the NDP Campaign Headquarters. When you are "creative" and create an issue, make sure that you have deleted pictures of the "poor student" from your candidate's websites first.

Once the media finds that they have been fooled, they tend to be a little harsh in their treatment of the resulting story and the voters tend to decide not to vote for you. -5% in the single day since the story broke![]()

I guess Twitter is yet another of these new-fangled things I don't understand; that link to a twitter page just shows a bunch of disconnected gibberish to me. Hey, you kids ... get off my lawn! There is a series of pictures of Awish and Irene putting up signs. Did you read the CBC page? CBC broke the news and now it has been picked up on twitter - probably mostly political junkies like me - and there is an article in the local newspaper.
Still can't see those photos (although there are a number of the candidate putting up signs) this morning, and can't find any reference whatsoever in the media to this. The CBC article says Awish had been a volunteer for the NDP two years ago -- nothing at all about these photos. Nothing in the London Free Press either. If it was so prominent that it is affecting NDP support, why can't I find anything at all about it? If the candidate has deleted the photos in the meantime, wouldn't there be some columnist in The National Post pointing to some "scandal"? Not that I think it is very important, just puzzled. There is a series of pictures of Awish and Irene putting up signs. Did you read the CBC page? Um ....I guess I am thick ... but i still see nothing whatsover in this photo (which was published days ago on the CBC website and the ndp's website) or article (red highlighted or not) to indicate that she was some kind of NDP plant in the crowd to disrupt Harper's rally (or that she deliberately registered in the hope of being ejected later?), or anything about her being accused of such a thing (other than some reference to the "twitterverse" in the CBC article you linked orginally...how does the "twitterverse" differ from anonymous comments on websites like this?)... or that she was in fact on the London candidate's website for this campaign, or how that has affected the NDP's standing. Still trying to understand the point of your post refering to all of that...sorry, I just don't get it.It took me less than a minute to find this picture
And then, there's this article: (Red highlight so that you can find it)
