all i can say is wow ...watching cnn right now

Tokyo (CNN) -- An 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit northern Japan on Friday, triggering tsunamis and sending a massive body of water filled with debris that included boats and houses inching toward highways.

The epicenter was 373 kilometers (231 miles) away from the capital, Tokyo, the United States Geological Survey said. But residents there felt the tremors.

The quake rattled buildings and toppled cars off bridges and into waters underneath. Waves of debris flowed like lava across farmland, pushing boats, houses and trailers toward highways.

In Tokyo, crowds gathered in the streets and tried to reach relatives via cell phone.

Scenes inside office buildings showed papers strewn all over the floor and people clinging onto seats and desks.

Such a large earthquake at such a shallow depth creates a lot of energy, said Shenza Chen of the U.S. Geological Survey.

It caused a power outage in about 4 million homes in Tokyo and surrounding areas.

A tsunami in the Pacific was moving closer to other shorelines in other countries, said CNN meteorologist Ivan Cabrera.

It triggered tsunami warnings for various countries, including Japan and Russia, the National Weather Service said.

"Earthquakes of this size are known to generate tsunamis potentially dangerous to coasts outside the source region," it said.

"Based on all available data a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicenter."

The quake was the latest in a series in the region this week.

Early Thursday, an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 struck off the coast of Honshu.

A day earlier, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck off of Honshu, the country's meteorological agency said.

The largest recorded quake took place in Chile on May 22, 1960, with a magnitude of 9.5, the USGS said.

CNN's Kyung Lah contributed to this report.

oh my god, I've been watching all morning. I have many friends over there and used to live there. Most the people I know I have been in contact with and are okay. Some have been evacuated anticipating another tsunami. This is so horrible. I was in a 4.9 when I was there and that was scary enough. The town of Sendai is being ravaged by fire. There is fear of radiation leaking. I hope all of your friends and family are okay. The phone lines/mobiles are down but many people are twittering/facebooking/mixi so if you can't reach them by phone, try internet. I'm still in shock from the footage.

Google launches Person Finder app; info on finding relatives in Japan

Vancouver Sun March 11, 2011 9:07 AM

Canadians were scrambling Friday to reach relatives and loved ones in Japan following the massive earthquake.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said they have not received any reports of any Canadians being injured or killed in the 8.9-magnitude quake, which so far been blamed for 44 deaths, a toll that is expected to climb.

Many in Canada trying to check on the safety of friends following the quake were met with dead phone lines.

Those who are trying to contact loved ones in Japan are asked to contact Red Cross Family Links. Those who are interested can contact the B.C.-Lower Mainland branch of the Red Cross to donate.

Also, Google is applying its expertise to helping to people locate information on loved ones in the aftermath of a major earthquake and tsunami near the city of Sendai, Japan.

As it did for recent devastating natural disasters in Haiti, Chile and New Zealand, Google has launched a Person Finder app, designed as a user-populated search tool for information on missing people in the area. Searchers can look up missing people by name, and get an update on their status. Several people listed in the database have taken to the site to post messages of their own, confirming their well-being.

At time of writing, the database has user-generated information on 8000 people, but will grow as more people search, and more information is logged.

BBC has put up a map of the most severely affected areas
The aftershocks are all over. A 6+ magnitude one just happened in Nagano, of Olympics fame and to the north of Sendai.

NHK (Japan Broadcasting) has live-streaming at http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/, and CNBC's website is using the feed as well at http://www.cnbc.com/id/24596546

TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting) has been updating its website on the latest, although the video side is so very slow and some of us might need to Google-translate it:

http://news.tbs.co.jp/

And for those who understand Japanese, Fuji TV has live-streaming at:

http://www.fujitv.co.jp/index.html

If we know someone in Japan, getting a glimpse at how things are can make us feel a little closer to them...

The nucleur plant at Fukushima may have experienced a leak. The radioactive measurement is 8 times the normal. The plant SCRAMed and shut down after the quake as the cooling system failed. It's been in a state of emergency since, with an evacuation order for the surrounding area, which has since been expanded from a radius of 3km to 10km.

The latest: The radioactivity level is now said to be 1,000(!) times of normal!

A solar flare might have been responsible.

Just got this from fido/rogers network. Thought some of you might want to donate to the earthquake in japan but not sure how...here's a good option

Fido
Our thoughts are with all those affected by the earthquake in Japan. To help, text ASIA to 30333 to donate $5 to earthquake relief efforts. 100% of donations go to Canadian Red Cross

All our prayers and thoughts for those affected. What a massive disaster and I fear the death count will be incredible when all is ascertained.

I'm not sure of the city/town name but they showed it on the tube today for a brief glance. Manisomoto or something like that.
A town of 71000 reported pop and all that could be seen was foundations of buildings and homes where a thriving city used to stand.

Very eery and scary to say the least as not even a single soul was seen walking about. My god the entire town was completely washed away by the tsunami. Devastating........"shaking head"

I have been to Japan few times. Each time I went there, I had a wonderful time. People were very nice and polite while foods, especially, sushi were excellent and the night clubs were so much fun. I thought about going back there this year, but it's too chaotic now. Hope for the fastest recovery!

If we ever get a major tsunami we can say goodbye to the airport and most of Richmond depending what angle it comes in. Vancouver Island is a good buffer, but water changes course to take the easiest route.

Course, Richmond will liquefy in a earthquake, anyway.

I called my friends in Japan to see whether they were OK, but couldn't get through due to the phone line problem. Then, I checked the facebook, and my friends posted there they were OK. Wow! The power of facebook!
