Many of Amsterdam's Brothels, Marijuana Cafes to Close

Saturday, December 06, 2008

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands — Amsterdam unveiled plans Saturday to shutter up to half of its famed brothels and marijuana cafes as part of a major cleanup of its ancient city center.

The city says it wants to drive organized crime out of the neighborhood, and is targeting businesses that "generate criminality," including prostitution, gambling parlors, "smart shops" that sell herbal treatments, head shops and "coffee shops" where marijuana is sold openly.

"By reduction and zoning of these kinds of functions, we will be able to manage better and tackle the criminal infrastructure," the city said in a statement.

It said it would also reduce a number of business it sees as related to the "decay" of the center, including peep shows, sex shows, sex shops, mini supermarkets, massage parlors and souvenir shops.

The city said there were too many of these and it believes some are used for money-laundering by drug dealers and the human traffickers who supply many of the city's prostitutes.

Under the plan announced Saturday, Amsterdam will spend $38-$51 million to bring hotels, restaurants, cultural organizations and boutiques to the center. It will also build new underground parking areas for cars and bikes and may use some of the vacated buildings to ease a housing shortage.
Amsterdam already had plans to close many brothels and said last month it might close some coffee shops throughout the city, but the plans announced Saturday go much further.

The city said it would offer retraining to prostitutes and coffee shop employees who will lose their jobs as a result of the plan.

Prostitution, which has spread into several areas of the center, will be allowed only in two areas — notably De Wallen ("The Walls"), a web of streets and alleys around the city's medieval retaining dam walls. The area has been a center of prostitution since before the city's golden shipping age in the 1600s.

Prostitution was legalized in the Netherlands in 2000, formalizing a long-standing tolerance policy.

Marijuana is technically illegal in the Netherlands, but prosecutors won't press charges for possession of small amounts and the coffee shops are able to sell it openly.

Been there Done that

It was fun walking through the variuos components of the red light district. The service wasn't that great; very mechanical and businesslike but the window shopping was superb.

Read an article that some of the places were owned by Hells angels and such so that doesn't really fit into the crime reduction mentality. Also they are looking at getting rid of the relaxed drug laws. It hasn't helped and if anything they find it disruptive for the average people.

What a degrading and discusting cesspool this is. Attracts every yahoo from around the world. The worst is the skinheaded nasty looking English guys with their no hair, pasty skin, foul mouths , public debauchery and penchant to beat the crap out of anybody they feel requires it, (as long as they have back-up).

As for the girls. They are old and need to fall back to the education they aquired in case "it doesn't work out." Plus few of them are Dutch and most of them have scary looking pimps lurking near by.

I guess Amsterdam's experiment is over. They got tired of the public urination the murdering, drug use and attracting the wrong element. Lone sexuall deviants (who wants him in their neighborhood?)

As for the Marijuana cafe's. They are falling victim to the no indoor smoking laws that we in Canada already went thru .

Removing all the moral & legal restrictions on society serves only to encourage people toward reverting to their primal instincts.

People need order.

People need limits.

They need common decency in their lives to become civilized.

Amsterdam was a failed experiment... an attempt to ignore thousands of years of what history has already taught us.

Actions have consequences, you either act responsible or irresponsibly.

It's a matter of character and maturity.

Those of low character & lacking in maturity are constantly looking for the zone where they can feel comfortable in their debauchery.

Yes, it is a fantasy for some but for others it is a lifestyle.

Life is full of energy - the choice is yours as to whether it is negative or positive.

Party on!

:D

Never the safest place
Do you see any suggestion that they intend to make the entire business illegal? That's not what they're doing. The issue seems to have been about zoning -- attempting to ghetto-ize everything into a neighbourhood.

Decriminalizing prostitution is not a "failed experiment" -- certainly not in New Zealand and the Australian state of New South Wales, which are far more relevant to Canada's situation, where the business already exists in scattered discrete locations.

I don't particularily blame them... things were getting out of control... although, I believe it was mostly the tourists and vagarants that didn't understand the local laws and customs that caused the most trouble.

The RL district wasn't supposed to spread beyond the original confines in the first place, so I can see people getting upset with that.

Here is a piece of information that will spell everything out:

http://www.centrum.amsterdam.nl/pdf/1012_EN.pdf

The sky isn't falling in.....

Some changes over the last 12 months in Amsterdam

1. No more mushrooms...

2. " Fashion Windows " have taken over some of the better windows in the RLD. These windows were taken from owners who didn't pay taxes or were associated with organized crime activities . IMHO, these fashion windows will fail, and then we will see what will happen.

3. Coffeeshops were forced to choose between selling alcohol or weed/hash...can't do both anymore

4. Silly tobacco ban has come into effect. Most people in Holland smoke weed/hash with tobacco. ( what a waste of good weed/hash ). But now, you cannot smoke tobacco in the shops..So, you must take your product outside to smoke ( which defeats the purpose of seperating users from the general public )

5 Good RLD's such as Alkmaar are scheduled to close anyday now

Pimping/trafficking is occurring all over Europe, not just Amsterdam

The FKK's of Germany are currently being over-run by the new EU members. ( Bulgaria/Romania/etc... ) Just like as in Amsterdam, these girls will do more services for less money, forcing typical Dutch/Belgian/ German girls to either give the same services/ lower their prices/ or move on to somewhere else

Best Regards
