Not the first or last time this kind of thing has or will happen.
I know a couple who had a similar thing happen to them. Not only can they not get rid of him even though the courts have evicted him but he is now suing them for harassment.
Turns out the guy they rented to is some kind of "professional litigator" who is unemployed and basically lives by suing people. Unfortunately in our system everyone gets their day in court regardless of how frivolous the case is. So hard working honest people have to hire lawyers while these ass hats with all the time in the world represent themselves.
Makes his living by most people settling his ridiculous suits rather than spending thousands of dollars and months, fighting with him.
What makes them feel even worse is all they had to do was Google the guy's name before renting to him and all kinds of info on him would have come up and they could have avoided the entire situation.
Live and learn.

Cheers
J

wait till they are out for a walk... then put everything on the street and change the locks. accept whatever financial consequences that ensues... move on.

Why on earth would the landlord give someone the keys to a place without the deposit or rent being paid first?

And there are ways, (not legal), of removing unwanted tenants if you know the right people.
