Okay, am reasonably computer literate, but can't figure this out.

My internet connection is experiencing intermittent, random blips. I use Firefox, FYI, have XP as my OS, and have Shaw high speed x-treme. I have had next to no problems in my long history with Shaw.

What happens is the connection will cease, and I see on the modem that it will seem to "reset" itself - I'll look at the modem and the green receive, send, and online indicator lights will go out, then "blink" back on, one at a time, and after about 30-45 seconds, re-engage again. As you might expect, very, very frustrating.

Is there something going on with my connection - or is it the modem? The Cable?

I bought a wireless router a few weeks ago, and the problems started after that - so I disconnected the router - but the problem still exists, so don't think it's that.

You computer experts out there....any thoughts?

The monster under your bed
Did you try Unplugging it and waiting then plugging it back in.
I've had to do that a few times with mine.

This is what you have to try to do:
1. power off modem
2. five minutes later, power off router
3. five minutes later, power on modem
4. after modem is back to normal (done initializing), power on router
5. must wait for the router to finish initialization.
I would also advise you to update your router's firmware.
your connection should be ok.

I had that happening to me. What Shaw found it to be was their entry hub was failing. It took a couple of trips because the problem was intermittant and the tech said it seldom happens. The previous trips, the tech had replaced all the filter/splitters, completely replaced the line from the entry hub to my computer and other things. Since they fixed their hub, I've had no problems. The hub is located on the pole and serves several homes.
It serves lots of homes! Not several!

Had the same issue. Shaw came out twice, couldn't figure it out. Switched to Telus. (Check RedFlagDeals.com on how to save a ton). Paying $28/mo for 15 mpbs.

Go to Shaw and replace the modem. They last about 3 years, sometimes less, before heat causes them to break down.
Also do you have a Linksys Router? Shaw has issues with Linksys routers since they introduced Extreme. You need to upgrade the Firmware to the latest to resolve the issue.

I had this happen to me too. I must have had a smart Shaw tech, because after a few minutes of troubleshooting he found a piece of missing insulation from one of the splitters in my patch panel, which he figured was causing interference and causing the signal to drop. He replaced the piece, and my problem hasn't come back since.

OK, so rather than try to go through a major overhaul - I went and bought a new coaxial cable to replace the one going from the cable splitter to the modem.

No problems since then. LOL
