Times are tough and I've fucked up my money for the last 2 months on ponning and no money to see the MD. My problem is a ance on my forehead that isnt going away using Clearasil or Stridex. Can anyone recommend something else to try that I can buy OTC.

Those ones use salicic acid (I don't know how to spell that). That stuff doesn't always work for most people and there is another range of products that use benzoil peroxide that you should try. There are lots of brands but the Spectro Gel 2.5% is the one I would recommend. I have a lot of friends who have had success with Benzoil peroxide and like the Spectro Gel brand the best for whatever reason. 2.5% is better than 5%. They've done studies and 5% is too harsh and the skin does not heal well.

http://www.acne.org talks about the clear skin regiment and this is what they recommend. Most people I know that tried their brand of 2.5%, including me, did not find it worked as good as Spectro Gel, which you can get at any drug store. It is with the acne stuff, not in the facewash section, about $8 for a month's supply.

But beware it bleaches things like crazy, such as your pillow cases and shirt collars so only wear it at night, wash it off really well in the morning and use an old pillow case.

Also face cleanser makes a HUGE difference. Non-scented, non-medicated, etc is best. Spectro Gel has one about $10 but if you can afford a bit more I'd honestly go to Clinique and get their non-medicated gentle facial cleaner. I'm allergic to a ton of products and the combination of these two things have saved my skin.

Thanks will give those a try. The Forehead is the only place I get any acne, too much stress maybe.

Depends if the acne is genetic and if it starts below the skin. I got the lazer treatment and it didnt help very much. Spent $200 a visit and went 5 or 6 times. Its painful too. Think of all the poon i could have had!

Regarding diet and foods - those are myths. I had acne when I was a young teenager in highschool, and I assure you it had nothing to do with what I ate. The whole nonsense about not eating pizza or oily foods is a myth.

The only cure for it - was accutane. It was a 3 month program that briefly made the acne become worse before it got better - but within 6 months I had perfectly clear skin which I have had to this day. Sorry to put a hole in the clean-liver theory, but in order to take accutane you must have a healthy and strong liver to begin with - they check with blood tests before and after.

Diet..

Recent studies show diet has very little effect on acne. (There used to be an old wives tale that chocolate or junk food causes acne...not true!)
Drinking lots of water does help to rehydrate.
Benzoil-peroxide is good, but can also dry out the skin.
There's a good topical cream that you can get by prescription, but I forget the name of it. Ask your doctor.
Accutane also works but only for severe cases, because it does have side-effects.

See your doctor; if his recommendations don't work, ask for a referral to a dermatologist.

A topical antibiotic (Clindamycin) was effective for me years ago, and no dryness afterwords. Lots of people are also prescribed a course of oral antibiotics like Tetracycline to help clear skin problems, depending on cause.

Hope that helps.

The problem is diet AND genetics. Some people slough off old dead skin cells easily while some have oily skin and when mixed with dead skin cells that plugs pores and you get pimples. Drinking water is good for your skin and your face. Try using Baking Soda as an exfoliant. Its VERY good and doesnt iritate your face, I use it. If you get a big juicy fat pimple use plain WHITE not that mulit colored shit toothpaste like Colgate. Dries it up in hours.

yeah, acne is such a pain, and such a debated topic. But is it acne? Acne vulgaris? Or the 'ole' garden variety pimples.

Once it was thought that pimples were related to hygiene, then to diet, now to hormones...but, it has recently been understood that high levels of sugar intake affect your hormone output...maybe there is a relationship in some people.

For me, as for others, it is hormonal....Acutaine worked well for my brothers back, those disfiguring purple lumps, and high levels of vitamin A worked for me when I was in my twenties..but not anymore...now I take high levels of Estrogen. (screw the breast cancer...just give me beautiful skin lol)

Testosterone is definitely a culprit in some, as anyone going through a sex change will tell you. I've been on it for menopause and behold, those zits that sit below the surface of the skin and emit high levels of pain, the swollen throbbing ones...no one knows they're there but you....until you dare to touch one and then they turn purple and leave pits (I've been able to resist!)

For these I have Clindamycin, a strong anti-bacterial cream, available only through a prescription. It was originally my sons, but, I purloined it as it immediately takes the swelling out of these types of zits.

Then there are blackheads, whiteheads, and those ordinary "monthly cycle" pimples, and I believe guys get a monthly cycle of some kind, as my sons pimples arrive as suddenly as a crowd at a Dairy Queen, hang around for a bit and depart leaving him unsullied.

You need to ask your doctor for a referral to a specialist. There are too many different factors to take into consideration. My mom and dad had perfect skin and 3 of their 5 kids had terrible, disfiguring acne. Apparently some people have a mutation on a chromosome that causes them to be extremely sensitive to normal levels of testosterone.

One of my sisters who escaped the teen years with perfect skin now has an awfully bad case of acne vulgaris on her back, and she's in her 60's

gawd, will it never end? good luck!

See a doc and get a prescription for Tetracycline and Clindamycin. It's probably the cheapest, most proven-effective solution.

Except for people with food allergies/intolerances. I am allergic to gluten...clear CLEAR skin, never had a zit til I was 20. Then I started getting sick. Once we figured out it was gluten and took it out of my diet my skin got better but never cleared back to how it was in highschool. Apparently my hormones are mixed up from my liver having to deal with so much of what it considered "poison" for so long but it is definitely improving with time.

A friend of mine used Proactive and her complexion cleared up really well.

You should be able to buy online or at the mall.

www.proactiv.com
The active ingredient in Proactive is benzoil peroxide. The whole system consists of a gentle cleanser, toner (that is simply Witch Hazel and alcohol) and the benzoil peroxide cream. It DOES work but Spectro Gel is much less than half the cost, save your money :)

Wash you forehead a few times a day with tersaseptic (its sold at all drug stores) and make sure you let it sit for 5 minutes. After you're done get your doctor to prescribe you a prescription strength ($10 or so) antibiotic cream like Fucidin. This should clear you up in under a week.

Thanks for all the advice. Maybe I have a bigger issue and that is seeing so many SP in 2 months that I dont have enough cash for a visit to a dermatologist. Sad isnt it, I have got to control this stupid behavior.

when i had acne i went to my doc and he prescribed some cream called stievamycin. It was harsh as hell and my entire face pretty much pealed off. My skin was so dry that it would hurt to smile. It was a rough 3 weeks, but ive been acne free since. Since then ive been using the Clinique Mens line including pre and post shave. Another reason i use it is because im allergic to most other shaving creams and moisturizers. Clinique is 100% allergy free.

<3 for Clinique

It's the only product line that is tested. I once spent over $100 on a super organic "good for your skin" cream that destroyed my skin. With Clinique I can go to bed with a face full of makeup and I don't break out. Other makeup I will break out if it is on my skin more than 2 or 3 hours. I'm glad to hear the men's line is good too...always wondered.
