I've got an Acer notebook that is not even 2 yrs old (cost me $900, ya i know, cheap) & the screen started failing (faint vertical shadow) 2 weeks ago.

Emailed the co. & tried phoning twice (30 min waits so i gave up)...finally got an email back this morning (took 10 biz days for them to respond) telling me i had to call so i sucked it up with a 40 min wait. Expressed my frustration (only swore once) with the guy on the end of the phone & the little shit threatened to hang up on me. Simmered down & was told it'd cost me $450 US plus shipping & handling to fix the damn thing. Fuck!

So i'm buyin' a new laptop (definately NOT Acer) & throwing this piece of junk in the trash.

What piece of throw away crap with crap service should i get now?

Sorry VV, I don't think $900 was cheap for a 2 yr old Acer. I've just been to Futureshop; you can almost get a new one for that price.
I think the $900 is what she spent 2 years ago when she bought it new. You'd have to be a complete idiot to spend $900 for a 2 year old computer.

right behind you!
VV, I am surprised you went for cheap.... My view on Computers is I only buy it where I know the Service is good, and or if I know where the guy who sells it to me lives!!!! Nothing like a knock on their door at 3 am when I can't Download my Porn! LOL (I am telling you, the kid's MOM gets upset at that!)

If your hard on you laptops like me, just buy them second hand, so you don't mind trashing them when they go bonkers..

Lots of electronic parts that are not worth fixing, it cheaper to by a new one.

Good luck with your new one!

You can get a new Acer for $500. But as someone said - go for the warranty. Best notebooks are still Lenovo/Thinkpad in my mind. Toshiba and Sony are good candidates, but Sony service sucks in my experience. The best bang for your $$ on warranty is Dell's no hassle one. They come to your house and fix it. and cover accidental damage as well.

Well, the reason it was cheap was because of the quality of the lcd monitor they used. I pretty much avoid all things Acer due to their "too cheap" price. Though I have had a decent monitor from them in the past. I'd imagine, though, that an LCD in a laptop faces more damaging handling than a desktop monitor.

I prefer HP or Toshiba (leaning more towards Toshiba). Again, for people buying a laptop, first do a search on the web about past performances of their lcds. It's difficult and expensive to replace a screen, so it's worth the research.

I have an ACER travel mate 4000

It works fine, but then I only bought it feb 2005 for $1800. But the reason I bought it is that my DELL computer, a top of the line Inspirion broke down after a little more than one year. So I was soured on Dell. But, every one I talked to said Dell was great.

What you do is go on to the Dell chat line and find out what trouble they are having with a particular make of computer you are thinking of buying. I imagine other makes of computers have there own user groups, and by reading the various questions you can decide what the issues are for the computer/notebook you want to buy.

Doesn't matter what brand ya buy there will always be someone who swears by it and someone who wouldn't cross the street to piss on it.

So I say buy what ever with the features you need and do it from a reputable place like Staples or F-shop. Get the extended warrenty so in 2yrs times you aren't standing around with your thumb in your ass starring at a black screen where your pokemon screen saver should be.

Not to mention with f-shop anyways you have 14 days to return it no Q's asked.

sorry about your problems with acer. about seven years ago i purchased an acer. was quite disappointed with the service. am very happy with toshiba service.

1. did you by any chance use a gold card to pay for the computer? some of them extend the warranty by one year so you may be very lucky. gold card extended warranties have come in very handy over the years.

2. i noticed that office depot on broadway has a toshiba notebook for about $350. it is one of a kind since it is most likely discontinued and sits at the front of the store on a table with other greatly reduced computer gear. noticed one computer for about 250 which is close to the cost of the xp operating system.
mac book. they have a new black one that is sexy as hell or the mac power book, that ones got the hard metal exterior which makes it kinda sexy as well.

MAC, MAC, MAC!!! :D

Make sure you buy the extended warranty though.. You have 1 year from purchase date to do so and it's about $300 but well worth it. I had some problems with my powerbook about a week after the regular warranty expired and it would have cost me $1000 to repair.. so $300 was money well spent.

It's a little frustrating getting used to in the beginning but I once you're comfortable with it, it's great.

oh.. mine's silver/metallic. beats white or blank and anything in between! :p

The way I look at it, buy another Acer for about $800. In another 2 years, when it starts going bad, get another one. It is like my cell phone. In another 2 years, better, faster, more bells & whistles will be out there and you will want a new computer. If you fix your old computer at $500, it will be worth about $300. There are some nice dual core intels out there, but I bet in another couple of years they will out dated anyways.

VV, I'd recommend either a Toshiba or a Dell. I used a Toshiba for about 5 years at work without a single problem. Switched to a Dell this time because I could customize it to my liking. If you don't need all the latest, greatest techno breakthroughs then get a Toshiba.

VV if the rest of the machine is working you could just get a monitor, 15" flat panels are cheap now, and you are back in biz.

I've fiddled and masturbated using Dell's desktop computers. Had an issue when the hard drive crapped out conveniently one month after the warranty expired. Swore I would never deal with Dell again...

I now fiddle and masturbate with Dell's Inspiron XPS notebook. I was attracted to the customize-ability as well as the 12.1" screen. Someone of my size doesn't need to carry a laptop wider than the expanse of my back. It's loaded with all sorts (CD-DVD burner, bluetooth, etc.) but weighs a God damn ton. My friends 16" screen laptop weighs less. And now that I'm dabbling in video, I'm looking at a Mac. And I hate Apple products. Was once to technical, and now available with at least Intel Duo Centrino and other, once exclusive to PC, bits.

Wait for the Core 2 Duo's coming out now, very nice processors for laptops.

They are now being sold and more models added each month.
