Just want to share this story with you.

I had plans to go to Las Vegas for a day of work and 3 days of relaxation and maybe hit some clubs (definately).

The work was prearranged and set up by email. I would never hussle in Las Vegas, knowing that prostitution is against the law.

I don't have a passport, so I thought "that is ok" I will just drive to Bellingham and fly from there.

I pulled up to the customs guy and he started drilling questions at me. He wanted to know where I was going and what was the purpose of my trip. I told him Las Vegas and pleasure. He questioned why was I by myself, I told him that I was meeting friends there. He did not believe me.

Then the real interagation inside the customs office, yikes, those guys are so intimidating they probably could smell my fear. I am not a very good liar. Over and over questions for a bout 20 minutes about my work and where do I live, why am I travelling alone ect.

The guy went and searched my car, I knew that my suitcases full of fancy clothes, toys, lingere and massive amount of shoes that I packed were definately going to give me away.

The guy came back and told me that they had to do a bunch of paper work on me and made me sit there on that hard bench for an hour and a half.

I was finger printed and photo taken, I thought for sure I was going to get stripped and searched too(I would enjoyed that, probably) Access Denied! WTF, I do not have a criminal record. Then told if I ever try to cross the border I better do so with extreme caution. So I suppose I have been "flagged" too to boot.

Ladies if you do plan to travel to the States, be careful how you pack your bags and make sure you have a good story as to why you are going to be visiting the USA.

I love Vancouver, there is no place like home.

Hey Sandi

Sorry to hear about you hassles with U.S. customs. Since you didn't make it to the casinos, you can always drop by my place for some strip poker. :)

Ouch :(

I hate to say it, but you probably wouldn't have had nearly as much hassle at airport Customs, nor if you'd had a passport in your possession. For some reason, a single person crossing the border in a vehicle for a "pleasure" trip usually seems to invoke suspicion and further questioning. And although the passport is not required for ground crossing, a lack of passport is just another reason for them to be wary of your intentions.

I'm truly sorry to hear you have been flagged - what a pain! Hindsight's a bitch :( Hopefully your taking the time to post your experiences will serve as a warning to other ladies to:

a) Get a passport (nobody who wants to be a travelling companion should be without one!),
b) Get enough "evidence" to support your "story" (i.e. be able to provide the address you will be staying at, the name of the "friend" you will be meeting, an itinerary, etc.), and
c) Don't EVER travel across the border with sex paraphernalia or anything else that might not appear to be squeaky clean in the event you are searched. Although it's annoying and expensive, you're better off to buy your supplies on the other side of the border and dispose of them before re-entering Canada.

As an additional caution, if any ladies are planning on touring to the US, make sure you sort out financial issues in advance of your trip. Even though you are allowed to take up to $10K in cash across the border, believe me, anything over $1K will raise suspicions in the event you are searched. Either set up an account at an international banking institution, wire the money to your account via Western Union, or purchase prepaid "credit cards" and then withdraw the money through an ATM when you get back home.

I must agree!

3 words: Come to Edmonton!
However I think it is very important that you pass my inspection before you can enter E-town.

Sorry to tell you this Sandie, but they may have banned you from the US for 5 years.... That means don't even take a flight that has a stop over in the US, going or coming back, as your name was surely added to the "USA Do not fly list".

I know of a story of a girl that was going to school from Toronto for 4 years in Chicago, and in August of what would have been her final year (5th) was banned from going to the US, and it was just because the customs guy wasn't having a good day.... yup those things happen.

I travel a great deal to the US, and I will say that US customs are the only officials I can say have lied to me a few times, that is how they try to scare the crap out of you. I once spent 2-3 hours at a US border crossing, they told me they spotted me hours before trying to enter the US, and I was refused. then they told me if I lied to them it was a 10,000 fine, Jail, and they would keep my car. I laughed at them, and said, if you lied, do you give me the 10,000$? Funny they never answered that one? And eventually let me in.

hmmmm

Sandie maybe you should show us what you had in your suitcase...... :D

I mean just help everyone out, we will know what not to pack...????

Thanks in advance!!! OOO and don't worry Vegas is a borring place, this week anyway......

Aren't there supposed to be appeal procedures for such cases?

[no appeal process] Not with Patriot Act I and II in place.

I just don't understand how that could be.
Extra scrutiny, or denying access one time - yes, that to me is logical.
And I understand that sometimes even a person who has a legitimate reason to be in the US and has not done anything illegal could not be let in one day.

But what in the Patriot Act prevents a person who is innocent from clarifying their name if a permanent or semi-permanent ban was imposed completely arbitrary? I understand it's probably expensive, time consuming and involves a lot of lawyers. But how could that be completely impossible unless a person actually committed something that the US views as an offense?

The attitude is your guilty until you prove otherwise, Sure like everything else you can appeal, but it will take time and money, you can't yell that you want a Video Replay 2 minutes later, it will take months.
