If you were at your current job for 5 years and relatively happy, would you leave if the compensation was $15,000 a year more?

Most folks fail to balance life quality with work. Now if you are a workaholic who cares about nothing else, then there is no balancing to do in your mind. If the $15k entails more time and mindspace commitment to work, then you may want to think twice, particularly if you have small kids now or will have in the future. Your life may be consumed by your job to the expense of everyone else (including you!). Then you will lose the most golden years with your kid(s), your marriage will eventually suffer, you will become one dimensional, and your life will be a walnut shell with dried fruit inside. If the move offers you more job satisfaction, a good environment, some more personal challenge... all without taking away from your non-work life, then what's to think?

If you're happy where you are working now, then I think it really depends on your lifestyle and finances. If an extra $15 000 is going to make a big difference in your life, go for it. If it's just a nice-to-have, then I say stay where you are. If you've been with your current employer for a while, chances are you have some hidden perks (like extra vacation time or a better pension plan) that can help offset the difference in salary.
