So..in my office where I work, I sit right next to a boardroom.
No big deal...the wall where I am is actually glass, so I can see everything that is going on, but can't hear much.

so...lately, I have seen one of our staff members going into the boardroom around 3:10-3:15pm everyday. I will say that he is "not" white/caucasian, but did see him wearing a "syrian revolution" t-shirt the one time.

When he goes into the room at this time, he takes his jacket and places it on the ground and then will start to do prayers. He will kneel on the coat and then it looks like he even kisses the ground. He then stands up and it looks like he's praying and then does it over again.

The whole "prayer" will last about 7-8 minutes.

Now, I'm just a regular white caucasian guy so am not sure what is happening. I'm guessing it might be something muslim (or another eastern religion) as it looks like something that he might do in a mosque.

Can anyone perhaps shed any light if there is anything significant and why he might be doing this.

thanks,

yes he is definitely Muslim and performing one of the 5 daily prayers. Muslims don't kiss the ground, they just touch the ground with their forehead, theres a routine and verses you have to memorize and stuff. I was born a Muslim so if you have any questions feel free to ask!

Religious freedom is a good thing. Hopefully, one day, the rest of the world will catch on to the beauty of it.

It sounds like he's doing no harm... perhaps you can mention it to him over lunch, in a nice, respectful way :) As long as he doesn't feel threatened, I'm sure he'll be happy to tell you. Then you can both go out, get drunk, and poon all night long.

Muslim... Doing his duhr prayers meaning he is performing his afternoon prayers/second prayer of the day
Yep...he's Muslim performing as Lolita said his Duhr prayer which is his noon prayer. Harmless unless you see him spending time practicing straight and level flight on Flight Simulator at his desk :D

christians used to do a similar thing. at 6am, noon and 6pm the church bells would ring and people would stop their work and recite the 'angelus'

I have had many drinking sessions with Muslims (not that they were especially devout or did their 5x a day prayers, but they certainly identified as Muslims and went to mosque on Fridays). I also accidentally stumbled into a room filled with local bigwigs during Ramadan, who were all passing whiskey around at mid-day; I backed out quickly with a dim-witted harmless foreigner expression. They are as hypocritical about such things as those of any other faith -- Catholics use birth control yet still call themselves Catholics, for example.

Yet, so much of Islamic literature is based on alcohol. And not always in a negative context. Even Khomeni participated in writing about drunken poetry under an allias. Homosexuality has it's own genre in classical Islamic literature. And not in a "kill them all" type way. .
The Koran has many poetic references to wine, as in being "drunk with love of the Word". It is not "based on alcohol", as you say, which could result in a total misrepresentation of the spirit of Islam. In fact, any reference to such things is always about being inebriated not with alcohol itself, but being intoxicated with the Koran. The Islamic principle being that one experiences life with full cognizance and that drugs and alcohol confuse and scramble consciousness.

As for homosexualism in Islam and your reference, that is interesting. I know of no such thing. Perhaps you can give a further explanation?

Lastly, I don't know what you mean that we are "victims of Orientalism". I hesitate to comment on what it sounds like, so I wonder about it.

Just google "orientalism." It used to be a more Romantic term for admiration of Middle Eastern culture -- T.E. Lawrence and Richard Francis Burton were considered "orientalists." You know, the whole Arabian Nights thing. According to the wiki, it is now used more in reference to colonialist paternalism and western assumptions about their culture.

I have a question about "cleansing of the pallette"......

An east-indian male in my office goes almost every lunch to the washroom (which is near where I sit) and literally "throws up" about 6 times in the bathroom (sounds like he's spitting really loud). My office cubicle is about 25 feet from the bathroom and you can hear what he's doing (the walls are thin). It's easy to see who it is as the bathroom is a single stall so you only go in one person at a time.

Does anyone know of this? I was talking to a coworker about what this person was doing and she told me that he's "cleansing his pallette" and it's a part of the Islamic religion.

He happens to do this right at lunch time when I'm eating and it makes my stomach queasy. I'm almost thinking of saying something to management as there are other bathrooms where he could be doing this and it almost makes me noxious

Can anyone verify this? Is this a common practice? I've never heard/seen this done before.

thanks

No this has nothing to do with Islam. What you described is an eating disorder (bulimia/anorexia). And you mentioned he is East Indian, he is probably Punjabi, not Muslim.

Unless he is not actually throwing up his food (not sure what you heard), he may be doing the cleansing routine before prayer (its called wadu). It requires you to rinse your mouth and nose and some men are really loud with the water (if he is a Muslim), and they're supposed to do it repeatedly like 3 times each, so maybe thats what it is, but you say its in a stall, this would be done in the sink, not anywhere near the toilet.
