I was browsing Craiglist "men seeking women", wondering if any guys were advertising for "sugar babes" and found the ad below. This guy certainly has a way with words! He is clearly very cynical for such a young lad, and I think such an ad will only attract equally cynical young ladies - which I suspect is _NOT_ what he is looking for. The third paragraph is the part I am particularly talking about, though I'm sure some of you will comment on the 3rd paragraph as well :)

"So here is the scoop... I am 24 years old. I am going places, I have a awesome job... and I am pretty good looking.
What I am looking for... Someone that is awesome, cute, and someone with ambition! We have grown up in a silver spooned generation and it seems like everyone our age has no desire to achieve anything. We should be thanking our parents for this!
Anyways so it seems like a lot of gold diggers and sugar babes are attracted to me :/ Don't ask me why! THIS IS SOMETHING I AM NOT LOOKING FOR AT ALL, I don't mind buying my girlfriend stuff but I don't want to be with you just so I can support you... BUT I offer the following analysis...

Your offer, from the prospective of a guy like me, is plain and simple a crappy business deal. Here's why. Cutting through all the B.S., what you suggest is a simple trade: you bring your looks to the party and I bring my money. Fine, simple. But here's the rub, your looks will fade and my money will likely continue into perpetuity...in fact, it is very likely that my income increases but it is an absolute certainty that you won't be getting any more beautiful! So, in economic terms you are a depreciating asset and I am an earning asset. Not only are you a depreciating asset, your depreciation accelerates! Let me explain, you're 24 now and will likely stay pretty hot for the next 5 years, but less so each year. Then the fade begins in earnest. By 35 stick a fork in you! So in Wall Street terms, we would call you a trading position, not a buy and hold...hence the rub...marriage. It doesn't make good business sense to so I'd rather lease. In case you think I'm being cruel, I would say the following. If my money were to go away, so would you, so when your beauty fades I need an out. It's as simple as that. So a deal that makes sense is dating, not marriage. Separately, I was taught early in my career about efficient markets.

Oh and I am usually only interested in white girls! "

Let the fun begin :)

I'm impressed Ray. You are clearly well read - or at least well read on this topic. The guy that posted the ad likely came across the article you reposted in one of his university eonomics courses.

That very idea has been bantered about for many years. Funny how when some people find it, they get off on it so much they try to pawn it off as their own brilliant thinking, when in fact copying such a simple idea as a female's beauty being a depreciating asset is like copying the idea that driving slower increases gas mileage...wow so brilliant!!!!

Well let's just say it won't be his huge brain that will win them over, and if that's any indication of his brilliant mind, then I would say his successful career is hardly that.

As has been mentioned, this is not exactly new, and it sounds like the guy (probably not a rich 24 year old) was just quoting it to amuse himself. And as has also been mentioned before, if your main marketing point for yourself is your money, then you had better be realistic about what sort of person you will attract.

He was probably trying to get into "best of CL" out of sheer douchery, but in order to be recognized one usually has to use original material. That whole depreciating asset pitch is not exactly a panty remover.
