i commonly see muslim couples on the street

the women are all dressed in traditional dress, complete with hijabs covering their heads and some even with niqabs covering their faces - beautiful... truly beautiful in every way - i mean some of those women can do more for my lower anatomy using their eyes alone than western women can do with painted-on jeans, their waists showing and their rubber tits on full display!

but the freakin' men - do you ever see them demurely dressed in traditional garb? nooooo... of course not! the latest in expensive running shoes, high end blue jeans, t-shirts with somebody else's name on them, oh-so fasionable week's worth of scruffy beard, designer sunglasses, shaven heads with a week's worth up there too...

where the fuck is the equity in that bullshit? don't the men have to live by the Qu'ran and dress modestly too? WORSE than freakin' INFIDELS!!!

on two occasions i've seen muslim males wearing traditional dress on vancouver streets - and they look GREAT  :frusty:

Funny, I was thinking the same thing as I watched a woman decked in the complete black covering, face and all, following her preppy looking husband and remaining about 4 paces behind him. I wondered why it never occurred to him to show his faith through his dress and manners.

It is the same for the East Indian couples. Only the older men seem to wear the traditional costume.

While I watched that particular Muslim couple it occurred to me that most other Muslim couples I have seen, the women are quite modern, and wear only a stylish scarf, so this couple is an oddity even in their own community.

Then I thought they are not so different from the BDSM couples that stroll about with collars and chains. I suppose it is a form of BDSM eh? Perhaps this is what both of them want...she to be restrained and controlled and he to be free and in control. In this country she has a choice.

Certainly other Muslim women I know are not into that version of their faith. They like to cover their hair but they wear skinny jeans, with high heel boots, and pretty tops and the scarves are cheerful and colourful, and they do not walk behind anyone!

In the end it is 'to each their own'

It was nice to see the East Indian men begin to wear traditional dress at the weddings rather than rely on the bride to carry it all....there were always wedding parties having their pictures taken at Queen Elizabeth Park on Saturdays and Sundays and in the past the men were in tuxes with cummerbunds and the women in traditional dress. Now more men are sporting the cool turbans and shoes etc...

I am pretty envious of cultures that can dress up in gorgeous colourful silks and look like princes and princesses!

A really good buddy of mine is muslim. Part of the problem is neither he or the wife drive. So its walking or transit. He is actually an atheist, but to keep his family happy, plays along for the most part. But in his words dressing like a sandnigger is just too much for him. His wife is pretty casual, even dresses kinda slutty when they hang out with friends. In Vegas a wild woman. But when she is with her mother, or visiting family, she will dress traditional. He hates it, he is the type of guy that hates the way many dress, much more than anyone.

Then add to that, people do make comments to him......like "why you make her dress like that?"
He even had a guy almost start a fight. The families get mad he wont dress up, wife mad he wont be more religious for her families sake. People in public think he is a sexist muslim, when he is really neither.

He says he knows a few guys like himself. Either the wife is more religious, or just cares more about pleasing her family, or their community in general. When the guys could care less. Or they are more accepted in the muslim community in general dressing western, cause its important in the workplace.

That's terrible. I'm a religion-hater of long standing, but it's so much more useful to demonstrate tolerance. Wish your buddy good luck.

yah, i could see that i guess... guys get exposed to new ideas in the workplace, and just being out in society more, so the process of westernization is faster for them than for the women, most of whom stay at home and bring up the kids. most of their contacts are women from the same ethnic background doing the same thing, so as a group they generally lag behind the men in westernization... hmmmm... guess i'll have to cool off a tad... (hate it when a good righteous mad-on starts to cool off though, lol) :)

i do like the looks that the women manage to sneak in when the men aren't looking though - first they meet my stare quite boldly, then after a few seconds they demurely lower their eyes, but right not to the ground at my feet, instead its about halfway - which means they're looking right at my package!! grrrr... bad cowboy... :D :thumb:

can't see the rest of their face though because they're wearing the niqab - maybe they're making gagging faces with their mouths, lol :pound:

He is a very calm funny guy, so people saying stuff actually gives him ammo when his wife gets upset with him.
But yeah, he must weigh 120, so lots of people get brave.

He is the type of guy, it some organization wanted to ban muslim traditional dress in public or whatever, he'd cut them a cheque.

just to put my two cents in.

have you ever noticed a muslim women she will be wearing the head scarf or whatever you call it,
to identify her as a devote muslim
and that is for modesty right, or to say im not a sexual object, or whatever,

but then she will be wearing tight expensive jeans. makeup maybe earrings,
she wears the head covering, but everything else, is highlighted to say, im a sexual creature
not all of these women some are modest no makeup quiet polite, they do everything they can to go unnoticed and quiet and respectful.
others just scream tight jeans makeup, there loud arrogant, everything says look at me, im a women im proud im in your face

I find this thread's generalizations to be quite offensive. Just the other day I saw a muslim couple on tv wearing bomber jackets and they looked as progressive as can be.

Nah seriously I know what you mean, it's a bit hypocritical. Seems to work for them though.
It is offensive. Only a very small portion of Muslims wear this garb. Most Muslims wear the same clothes as anyone else here, right down to the Lululemon pants. But, as Hunka said, why would anyone care?

No doubt that there are some spouses who just have a different outlook of dress codes. However, if you look at all those conservative countries in the middle east it is pretty obvious that the modesty code only applies to women. It has nothing to do with religion or Islam, it is just representative of the conservative paternalistic mysogenic culture they have in that part of the world, which has unfortunately got tacked on to Islam elsewhere. I have never understood why someone who follows Islam has to live by a code of Bedouin traditional culture when they are not Bedouins themselves. There is nothing inherently superior or pure about Bedouin culture, so why are people in other parts of the world bound to it over their native culture?

The issue I have with many who follow Islam (or Christianity or any other religion for that matter) is that they focus on culture rather than the message of their religion.

While I will happily agree that women get the worst of it, this isn't true. Males are pretty covered - in blazing heat - and western tourists in shorts and T-shirts really stick out.

Traditional dress is worn to protect the body from desert conditions, it has nothing to do with modesty.

Also, modesty is not just what you cover, it is primarily behaviour and displays of wealth and/or ornamentation. Being humble is an important component of modesty.

What makes me the angriest is when some people believe that covering a woman up helps protect women or make people respect them.

The countries where women are treated at best like second class citizens or at worst like garbage are also the countries where women are covered up the most.

I'm really glad I live in a country where I don't get beat with a stick for showing my calves.

the pepperpots that I used to see in Y town...are all in their 20's...fat, with 3 kids in tow......their husbands, have never heard of a gym, or passing up on a second helping, are always walking in front of them, yakking on their cells.....from what I have seen so far, we aren't missing anything by them being covered up.

What's a pepperpot?

Also, how is your description of pepperpots different from other couples with children?

I was not talking about traditional dress, I was talking about the amount of body coverage. In general arms and legs are covered up for men too, regardless of their style of clothing.

The families get mad he wont dress up, wife mad he wont be more religious for her families sake.
This is the sentence I love the most. Having dated a woman with a devout Catholic family, I can tell you the feeling belongs to no single religion.

There is something to be said about being religious because someone tells you to be versus being religious because it is what makes you feel good.
